The Year 243 AH
ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ ثَلَاثٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ سَارَ الْمُتَوَكِّلُ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ فِي ذِي الْقِعْدَةِ عَلَى طَرِيقِ الْمَوْصِلِ، فَضَحَّى بِبَلَدٍ، فَقَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُهَلَّبِيُّ: أَظُنُّ الشَّامَ تَشْمَتُ بِالْعِرَاقِ إِذَا عَزَمَ الْإِمَامُ عَلَى انْطِلَاقِ فَإِنْ يَدَعِ الْعِرَاقَ وَسَاكِنِيهِ فَقَدْ تَبْلَى الْمَلِيحَةُ بِالطَّلَاقِ [ من حج بالناس هذه السنة ] وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ مُوسَى. وَحَجَّ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ وَهُوَ وَالِي الطَّرِيقِ وَأَحْدَاثِ الْمَوْسِمِ. خروج أهل طليطلة إلى طلبيرة وَفِيهَا خَرَجَ أَهْلُ طُلَيْطِلَةَ بِجَمْعِهِمْ إِلَى طَلَبِيرَةَ وَعَلَيْهَا مَسْعُودُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَرِيفُ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَيَمَنْ مَعَهُ مِنَ الْجُنُودِ، فَلَقِيَهُمْ، فَقَاتَلَهُمْ، فَانْهَزَمَ أَهْلُ طُلَيْطِلَةَ، وَقُتِلَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ، وَحُمِلَ إِلَى قُرْطُبَةَ سَبْعَ مِائَةِ رَأْسٍ.
Translation
✧ Then the year 243 AH commenced. In this year al-Mutawakkil traveled to Damascus in Dhū al-Qaʿdah by way of al-Mawṣil, and he offered the sacrificial animal at a place. Yazīd b. Muḥammad al-Muhallabī said: I think Syria will gloat over Iraq when the Imam resolves to depart. If he abandons Iraq and its dwellers, the beautiful one may be worn out by divorce. [He who led the people in the pilgrimage this year] ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Mūsā led the people in the pilgrimage. Jaʿfar b. Dīnār also made the pilgrimage, and he was the governor of the route and of the events of the pilgrimage season. The going forth of the people of Toledo to Talavera In this year the people of Toledo went forth with their entire assembly to Talavera, over which was Masʿūd b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿArīf. He went out to meet them with the troops who were with him, encountered them, and fought them. The people of Toledo were defeated, most of them were killed, and seven hundred heads were carried to Cordoba.
