فَرَجَعْتُ مِنْ مَكَانِي ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd b. ʿUbayd al-Jawharī Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd b. ʿUbayd al-Jawharī, mawlā of Umm Salamah al-Makhzūmiyyah, wife of al-Saffāḥ. He held the qāḍīship of al-Madīnah al-Manṣūriyyah after ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq al-Ḍabbī. Al-Wāthiq dismissed al-Ḍabbī in the year 228 and appointed al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī as qāḍī while his father was still alive. He was a man of magnanimity. Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī He died in Rajab of this year. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿUthmān b. Ḥammād b. Ḥassān b. Yazīd, Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī. He heard from Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, Hushaym b. Bashīr, Ibn ʿUlayyah, and many others. Al-Kudaymī and al-Bāghandī narrated from him. He was among the virtuous scholars, righteous, devout, generous, an author, and he had a good history. He held the qāḍīship of al-Sharqiyyah. Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī said: I fell into a strait in which I reached the utmost extremity, until the butcher, the grocer, the baker, and all the tradesmen pressed me hard, and no device remained to me. One day while I was in that state, thinking of a device, the servant entered and said: “A pilgrim is at the door asking permission.” I said: “Give him permission.” The Khurāsānī entered, greeted, and said: “Are you Abū Ḥassān?” I said: “Yes. What do you need?” He said: “I am a stranger who wants to perform the ḥajj. I have ten thousand dirhams with me, and I need them to remain with you until I complete my ḥajj and return.” I said: “Bring them.” He produced them and departed after he weighed them and sealed them. When he departed, I broke the seal on the spot. Then I summoned the tradesmen and paid every debt I owed, and I had ease and spent, and I said: “I guarantee this money to the Khurāsānī, and by the time he comes, God will have brought relief from Him.” So that day I was in ease, not doubting that the Khurāsānī would depart. When I arose the next morning, the servant entered and said: “The Khurāsānī pilgrim is at the door asking permission.” I said: “Give him permission.” He entered and said: “I had resolved on what I informed you of, but then news reached me of my father's death, and I have resolved to return to my country. So order that the money I gave you yesterday be returned to me.” He said: An affair came upon me the like of which had never come upon me. I was bewildered and did not know what to say to him or how to answer him. I thought and said: What shall I say to the man? Then I said: “Yes, may God [Most High] keep you well. This house of mine is not secure. When I took your money, I sent it to someone with whom it is kept. Return tomorrow to take it.” He departed, and I remained bewildered as to what I should do. If I denied him, he would bring me forward and make me swear, and that would be disgrace in this world and the next. If I put him off, he would shout and expose me, and the matter would become very difficult for me. Night fell while I was thinking of the Khurāsānī's early coming to me, and sleep did not come to me nor could I close my eyes. I went to the servant and said: “Saddle the mule.” He said: “My master, this is still the first part of the night, and nothing of the night has passed. Where will you go?” I returned to my bed, but sleep was impossible. I kept going to the servant and he kept turning me back, until I had done that three times, while I could not settle. Dawn rose, so he saddled the mule and I mounted, not knowing where to head. I threw the mule's rein and began to ponder while it carried me until I reached the bridge. It turned aside with me, so I let it, and I crossed. Then I said: Where do I cross to, and where do I go? But if I return, I will find the Khurāsānī at my door. Let it go wherever it wills. The mule went on. When it crossed the bridge, it took me to the right toward [the vicinity of] Dār al-Maʾmūn. I let it until it drew near the gate of al-Maʾmūn, and the world was still dark. Then a horseman met me, looked at my face, then moved on and left me. Then he came back to me and said: “Are you not Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Answer the amīr al-Ḥasan b. Sahl.” I said to myself: What does al-Ḥasan b. Sahl want from me? Then I went with him until we came to his gate. He asked permission for me, and it was granted. He said: “Abū Ḥassān, what is your news? How is your state? Why have you stopped coming to us?” I said: “For reasons,” and I began to make excuses. He said: “Put that aside. You are in a confusion or some affair. I saw you last night in a dream in great disorder.” So I began and related my story from beginning to end until his messenger met me [and I entered upon him]. He said: “Do not grieve, Abū Ḥassān. God has relieved you. This purse is for the Khurāsānī in place of his purse, and another purse is for you to have ease with. When it runs out, inform us.” So I returned from my place, paid the Khurāsānī, and had ease. God granted relief, and to Him be praise. Abū Ḥassān died in Rajab of this year at the age of eighty-nine years and some months. He and al-Ḥasan b. al-Jaʿd died at the same time, Abū Ḥassān being over al-Sharqiyyah and al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī over the city of al-Manṣūr. Al-Khalīl b. ʿAmr Al-Khalīl b. ʿAmr, Abū ʿAmr al-Baghawī. He resided in Baghdād and transmitted there from Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ and ʿĪsā b. Yūnus. Al-Baghawī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He died [there in Ṣafar] in this year. Abū Yaḥyā al-Quḍāʿī al-Ḥarasī Zakariyyā b. Yaḥyā b. Ṣāliḥ b. Yaʿqūb, Abū Yaḥyā al-Quḍāʿī al-Ḥarasī. He transmitted from al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah, Rishdīn b. Saʿd, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb. The qāḍīs accepted him, and he died in Shaʿbān of this year. Al-Ṭayyib b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm Al-Ṭayyib b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Muḥammad al-Dhuhlī, known as Abū Ḥamdūn al-Qaṣṣāṣ, the pearler, and the piercer. He transmitted the readings of the Qurʾān from the trustworthy authorities: al-Kisāʾī and Yaʿqūb al-Ḥaḍramī. He transmitted from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah and Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb. Abū al-ʿAbbās b. Masrūq and others narrated from him. He was among the sincere ascetics. He said: Abū Ḥamdūn al-Ṭayyib b. Ismāʿīl was among the best ascetics, famous for the readings. He would head to places where there was no one to teach the people the Qurʾān, and he would teach them until they had memorized. Then he would move to others of the same description. He often picked up abandoned infants. Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Masrūq said: I heard Abū Ḥamdūn the Qurʾān reciter say: One night I prayed and recited, and I assimilated one letter. Then slumber overtook me, and I saw as if a light had clung to me, saying: “God is between me and you.” I said: “Who are you?” It said: “I am the letter you assimilated.” He said: I said: “I will not do it again,” and I awoke, and I never again assimilated a letter. Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Ṣalīḥ says: Abū Ḥamdūn al-Ṭayyib b. Ismāʿīl lost his sight. A guide of his led him to enter the mosque. When he reached the mosque, his guide said to him: “Master, take off your sandal.” He said: “Why, my son, should I take it off?” He said: “Because there is filth on it.” Abū Ḥamdūn was grieved, and he was one of God's righteous servants. He raised his hand, supplicated with some prayers, and wiped his face with it. God restored his sight, and he walked. Al-Qāsim b. ʿUthmān al-Jūʿī Al-Qāsim b. ʿUthmān al-Jūʿī. He had a chain of transmission from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah and others. Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī said: I heard al-Qāsim al-Jūʿī say: The friends of God were sated with love away from hunger, so they lost the pleasure of food, drink, and desires, because they took pleasure in a pleasure above which there is no pleasure, and it cut them off from every pleasure. I am only called Qāsim al-Jūʿī because God Most High strengthened me against hunger. If I were left without food being brought to me, I would not care. My self has become so disciplined that if it were left for a month without provision, it would not eat or drink and would not care. I am content with it, driving it wherever I wish. O God, You have done this for me, so complete it upon me. Muḥammad b. Aslam b. Sālim b. Yazīd Muḥammad b. Aslam b. Sālim b. Yazīd, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Kindī al-Ṭūsī. He heard from ʿAbdān b. ʿUthmān, Saʿīd b. Manṣūr, al-Ḥumaydī, Qabīṣah, and Yazīd b. Hārūn, among many others. He was one of the righteous. Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ said: I entered upon Muḥammad b. Aslam, and I could only liken him to the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Muḥammad b. Aslam used to serve himself and his family and draw water from the river with jars on cold days. When he fell ill, he would not tell anyone of his illness, and he would not seek treatment. Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim said: I heard Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh say: In fifty years I have not heard of a scholar more firmly holding to the example of the Messenger of God ﷺ than Muḥammad b. Aslam. Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Muḥammad b. Aslam said to me: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, what do I have to do with these people? I was alone in my father's loins, then I became alone in my mother's womb, then I entered the world alone, then my soul will be taken alone, then I will enter my grave alone, then Munkar and Nakīr will come and question me alone, then I will go where I go alone, then my deeds and sins will be placed in the balance alone, and if I am sent to Paradise, I will be sent alone, and if I am sent to the Fire, I will be sent alone. So what do I have to do with people? He said: I accompanied him for more than twenty years and never saw him perform the two voluntary rakʿahs except on Friday, nor glorify God or recite where I could see him. No one knew his secret and his open conduct better than I did. I heard him swear many times: If I could perform voluntary worship where my two angels would not see me, I would do it. He used to enter a room and lock its door, taking with him a jug of water, and I did not know what he did, until I heard a young son of his imitating his weeping, and his mother forbade him. I said to her: What is this weeping? She said: Abū al-Ḥasan enters that room, recites the Qurʾān, and weeps, and the boy hears him and imitates him. When he wanted to come out, he would wash his face and apply kohl, so no trace of weeping was seen on him. He used to give to some people, bestow on them, be dutiful to them, and clothe them. He would send to them and say to the messenger: See that they do not know who sent it to them. He himself would come to them at night, take it to them, and hide himself. Sometimes their clothes wore out and their provisions ran out, and they did not know who gave them. He said: I entered upon him one day four days before his death, and he said to me: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, come, let me give you good news of what God has done for your brother. Death has come to me, and God has favored me that I do not have a single dirham for which God will call me to account. He knew my weakness and that I cannot bear the reckoning, so He left me nothing to call me to account for. Then he said: Lock the door and do not permit anyone to enter upon me until I die. Know that I am leaving the world with no inheritance except my cloak, my felt mat, my vessel in which I perform ablution, and my books. With him was a small purse containing about thirty dirhams. He said: This is for my son; a relative of his gave it to him as a gift, and I know of nothing more lawful for me than it, because the Prophet ﷺ said: “You and your wealth belong to your father.” So shroud me from it. If you find for me for ten dirhams what covers my nakedness, do not buy for me for fifteen. Spread my felt mat over my bier, cover it with my cloak, and give my vessel as charity to a poor man to perform ablution in it. Then he died on the fourth day, and approximately a thousand thousand people prayed over him. Ibn Aslam died in this year and was buried beside Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Tujībī Muḥammad b. Rumḥ b. al-Muhājir, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Tujībī. He reported from Mālik b. Anas, and al-Layth and Ibn Lahīʿah narrated from him. He is trustworthy and reliable. He died in Shawwāl of this year. Abū Hāshim al-Iskandarānī Hāniʾ b. al-Mutawakkil b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥarmalah, Abū Hāshim al-Iskandarānī. He transmitted from Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ and Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ. He exceeded one hundred years. In this year Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab, amīr of Ifrīqiyyah, died on the tenth of Muḥarram. He was thirty-six years old, and his son Abū Ibrāhīm Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab succeeded him. Muḥammad b. Muqātil al-Rāzī and Abū Ḥuṣayn b. Yaḥyā b. Sulaymān al-Rāzī the ḥadīth scholar also died. Among the notables who died in it were: Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, qāḍī of the city of al-Manṣūr. And Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, one of the transmitters of the Muwaṭṭaʾ from Mālik; ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhakwān, one of the famous reciters; Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmmār al-Mawṣilī, one of the imams of jarḥ and taʿdīl; and the qāḍī Yaḥyā b. Aktham.
