Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred and forty-two began. Occurrence of earthquakes in Qūmis and its rural districts In this year there were terrifying earthquakes in Qūmis and its rural districts in Shaʿbān, and houses collapsed, and many people perished beneath the rubble; it was said that their number was forty-five thousand and ninety-six souls, and most of that was at al-Dāmaghān. In Syria, Fāris, and Khurāsān in this year there were earthquakes and dreadful sounds, and in Yemen there was the like of that along with a sinking of the earth. The Byzantines' sortie from the direction of Shimshāṭ In it the Byzantines came out from the direction of Shimshāṭ after ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Armanī had departed from the summer expedition, until they approached Āmid, and they emerged from the frontier fortresses and the Jazīra region and plundered and took captive about ten thousand. Their entry was from the direction of Ibrīq, the village of Qarībāsā, then they returned. Qarībāsā and ʿUmar b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Aqṭaʿ and a group of volunteers went out in their tracks but did not catch up with them. Al-Mutawakkil wrote to ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Armanī ordering him to march against their country in winter. Al-Mutawakkil's killing of a perfumer In it al-Mutawakkil killed a perfumer who had been a Christian, then converted to Islam and remained a Muslim for many years, then apostatized. He was asked to repent but refused to return to Islam, so he was killed and burned. In it Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in al-Andalus dispatched an army to the land of the polytheists. They entered as far as Barshilūna, fought against its fortresses, and crossed beyond its districts, gaining much booty. They conquered a fortress of the districts of Barshilūna called Ṭirāja, which is among the last of the fortresses of Barshilūna. Who led the people in pilgrimage this year ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Imām led the people in pilgrimage, and he was governor of Makkah. Jaʿfar b. Dīnār led the pilgrimage along the route and oversaw the events of the pilgrimage season. Stoning of the village of al-Suwaydāʾ in Egypt The village called al-Suwaydāʾ in the region of Egypt was stoned with five stones. One of the stones fell on the tent of a Bedouin and it burned. One of the stones was weighed and was five raṭls. Four of them were carried to al-Fusṭāṭ and one to Tinnīs. He said: It was mentioned that a mountain in Yemen, on which there were cultivated fields belonging to its people, moved until it came to the cultivated fields of a people and settled there. This was written about to al-Mutawakkil. A thunderbolt falling at al-Bardān A thunderbolt fell at al-Bardān and burned two men, and it struck the back of a third man, which turned black from it, and it fell into the water. Ibn Ḥabīb said: ʿAlī b. Abī al-Waḍḍāḥ mentioned that a bird, smaller than a vulture and larger than a crow, white, landed on a riding beast in Aleppo with seven nights remaining of Ramaḍān and cried out: "O people, fear God, God, God," until it cried out forty times, then flew away. It came the next day and cried out forty cries. The postal official wrote about that and had five hundred people who heard it bear witness. A man died in one of the districts of al-Ahwāz in Shawwāl, and a white bird fell upon his bier and cried out in Persian and in Khūzī: "God has forgiven this deceased and those who attended him." Ibrāhīm b. Maẓhar b. Saʿīd al-Kātib al-Anbārī made the pilgrimage from al-Baṣra on a cart pulled by camels, on which there was a church-like structure, a privy, and domes, and he took the Madinah road. It was the most wondrous thing people saw in the pilgrimage season.
