Translation

✧ An account of the building of Bethlehem and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre King Constantine built Bethlehem on the site of the Messiah’s birth, and his mother Helena built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, meaning over the tomb of the crucified one. They concede to the Jews that he is the Messiah, yet these and those have disbelieved. They laid down canons and rulings, some of which contradict the ancient one, which is the Torah, and they permitted things that are forbidden by the explicit text of the Torah, among them the pig. They prayed toward the east, whereas the Messiah prayed only toward the rock of the Holy House, as did all the prophets after Moses. Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, prayed toward it after his emigration to Madinah for sixteen—or seventeen—months, then he was turned toward the Kaʿbah, which Abraham the Friend built. They adorned churches with images, whereas they had not been adorned before that, and they composed the creed that their children, women, and men memorize, which they call “the Amanah,” though in reality it is the greatest disbelief and treachery. All the Melkites and the Nestorians, the followers of Nestorius of the second council, and the Jacobites, the followers of Yaʿqūb al-Barādiʿī of the third council, hold this creed, though they differ over its interpretation. Here I recount it—and one who recounts disbelief is not thereby a disbeliever—in order to expose, despite its wording, the feebleness of its expressions and the abundance of disbelief and confusion that leads its adherent to the fire of blazing flame. They say—may God’s successive curses be upon them until the Day of Resurrection—: We believe in one God, the ruler of all, creator of the heavens and the earth, of all that is seen and all that is unseen, and in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, born of the Father before all ages, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, equal to the Father in essence, through whom all things were made; who for us human beings and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary, and became man; and was crucified in the time of Malaṭis the Nabataean, and suffered and was buried, and rose on the third day, as it is in the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sat at the right hand of the Father. And also He will come with His body to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom has no end; and in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets; in one holy, universal, and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen.
