Translation

✧ Then the year 239 AH commenced. In this year, al-Mutawakkil ordered that the People of the Covenant be required to wear two honey-colored outer garments over their cloaks and tunics, and to restrict their riding mounts to mules and donkeys, excluding horses and barādhīn. In it, al-Mutawakkil banished ʿAlī b. al-Jahm to Khurāsān. (And in it, al-Mutawakkil ordered the demolition of churches newly built in Islam.) (And in it, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān dispatched an army with his brother al-Ḥakam to the fortress of Rabāḥ. The people of Ṭulayṭila had destroyed its wall and killed many of its inhabitants. Al-Ḥakam repaired its wall, restored to it those of its inhabitants who had left, and improved its condition. He advanced to Ṭulayṭila, wrought destruction in its environs and devastated them. Muḥammad also dispatched another army to Ṭulayṭila. When they approached it, troops came out upon them from ambushes, the army was routed, and most of those in it were killed.) [Mention of Several Events] ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Armanī led the summer expedition. In it, Jaʿfar b. Dīnār performed the pilgrimage with the troops guarding the road to Makkah and the pilgrimage season. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd b. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā, who was governor of Makkah, led the people in the pilgrimage this year. In it, Palm Sunday for the Christians coincided with the day of Nayrūz, which was Sunday, with twenty nights remaining of Dhū al-Qaʿdah. The Christians claimed that they had never coincided in Islam. [The Dismissal of Yaḥyā b. Aktham from the Judiciary] In this year, Yaḥyā b. Aktham was dismissed from the judiciary, and Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad al-Taymī was appointed judge of al-Baṣrah. Yaʿqūb b. Qawṣarra arrived, and seventy-five thousand dinars were taken from his house, and he was reconciled on condition that he pay one hundred and twenty thousand dinars. Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid was appointed in his place. Ṭabariyyah was struck by an earthquake in Jumādā al-Ūlā, in the first quarter of the night, so that the ground swayed and the mountains collided. Then it quaked, and a piece eighty cubits in length and fifty cubits in width broke off from the mountain overlooking it and shattered. Many people died beneath it, and it destroyed houses.
