✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Ibn Rāhawayh Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. [Makhallad b. Ibrāhīm, Abū] Yaʿqūb al-Ḥanẓalī, known as Ibn Rāhawayh. He was born in the year 161 AH, and it is said in the year 166 AH. He was born with pierced ears, and al-Faḍl b. Mūsā al-Shaybānī said to him: "This one will be a leader in good or in evil." ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir said to him: "Why are you called Ibn Rāhawayh?" He said: "My father was born on the road, so it was said Rāhawayh." Isḥāq traveled in pursuit of knowledge to Iraq, the Hijaz, Yemen, and Syria, and heard from Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, Ismāʿīl b. ʿUlayya, Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, Wakīʿ [b. al-Jarrāḥ], Abū Muʿāwiya, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, al-Naḍr b. Shumayl, ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, and others. Narrated from him: al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and many others. He combined hadith and fiqh, memorization and truthfulness, piety and asceticism. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal used to say: "I do not know of anyone in Iraq comparable to Isḥāq," and he said once: "We have not seen his like." Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm used to say: "I have memorized seventy thousand hadiths as if they were before my eyes." ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir said to Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh: "I have been told that you have memorized one hundred thousand hadiths?" He said: "One hundred thousand hadiths—I do not know what that is, but I have never heard anything without memorizing it, and I have never memorized anything and then forgotten it." [Isḥāq] b. Rāhawayh died on Thursday night, the middle of Shaʿbān of this year, in Naysābūr. Al-Bukhārī said: He died at the age of seventy-seven. Bishr b. al-Walīd b. Khālid Bishr b. al-Walīd b. Khālid, Abū al-Walīd al-Kindī. He heard Mālik b. Anas, Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī, Sharīk b. ʿAbd Allāh, and Abū Yūsuf, from whom he took fiqh. A group narrated from him, among them: al-Baghawī. He was a learned, devout, jurist, trustworthy man, of good doctrine and excellent conduct. He was appointed judge of ʿAskar al-Mahdī on the eastern side of Baghdad when Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Makhzūmī was dismissed from it, and that was in the year 208 AH. He remained in that office for two years, then was dismissed and appointed judge of the City of al-Manṣūr in the year 210 AH, and he continued to hold that post until he was removed from it in the year 213 AH. Ṭalḥa b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar said: When al-Maʾmūn dismissed Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Abī Ḥanīfa, he appointed Bishr b. al-Walīd al-Kindī as judge over the City of al-Manṣūr. He was a learned, devout man, harsh in matters of judgment, with extensive fiqh. He was the companion of Abū Yūsuf, and people transmitted from him such fiqh and legal issues as cannot be collected. Ṭalḥa said: ʿAbd al-Bāqī b. Qāniʿ narrated to me from some of his teachers: Yaḥyā b. Aktham complained about Bishr b. al-Walīd to al-Maʾmūn and said: "He does not execute my judgments." Yaḥyā had gained such ascendancy over al-Maʾmūn that he was more than his own son. Al-Maʾmūn seated him with him on his throne, and summoned Bishr b. al-Walīd, and said to him: "What is it with Yaḥyā complaining about you, saying that you do not execute his rulings?" He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you asked about him in Khurasan, and he was not praised in his own country or in his neighborhood." Al-Maʾmūn shouted at him and said: "Go out!" So [Bishr] went out. Yaḥyā said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you have heard; dismiss him." He said: "Woe to you! This man did not consider me; how can I dismiss him?" And he did not do it. The compiler said: Despite his leaning toward the people of opinion, Bishr did not assist against Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. A man denounced him to al-Muʿtaṣim, saying: "He does not say the Qurʾan is created." So he confined him in his house and forbade him from giving legal opinions. When al-Mutawakkil assumed power, he released him, and ordered him to give fatwas and transmit hadith. The matter of the Qurʾan became problematic for him, so he adopted the position of suspension (waqf), and the people of hadith criticized him and abandoned him. He deteriorated in old age until they said: "He has become senile." He died in this year at the age of ninety-seven, and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Shām. Abū al-Faḍl al-Marwazī Al-Rabīʿ b. Thaʿlab, Abū al-Faḍl al-Marwazī. He was born in Marw and resided in Baghdad, where he transmitted hadith from al-Faraj b. Faḍāla. Al-Baghawī narrated from him. Hāshim al-Baghawī, and others. Yaḥyā and al-Dāraquṭnī declared him trustworthy. Ṣāliḥ Jazara said: "He is truthful, but he narrates from weak narrators." He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 238 AH, at the age of ninety-three. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Barjalānī Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn [al-Barjalānī], Abū Jaʿfar, known as Ibn Abī Shaykh al-Barjalānī. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā narrated from him extensively, as did Abū al-ʿAbbās b. Masrūq and others. A man asked Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal about something from the hadith on asceticism, and he said: "Go to Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Barjalānī." Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: "He died in this year." Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barāthī Muḥammad b. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Ghazwān, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barāthī. [He was among the people of religion and virtue, and he possessed wealth and affluence. He narrated from Hushaym and Sufyān b. ʿUyayna. Bishr b. al-Ḥārith used to feel at ease with him in his affairs. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī used to say: "What is it with you? Does anything fall from the sky upon anyone? But Bishr had a friend." He heard Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh and Baqiyya b. al-Walīd. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn wrote from him, and Yaḥyā said: "He is trustworthy." Abū ʿUbayda al-Busrī He died in this year. Abū ʿUbayda al-Busrī. Busr is a village above Damascus. Abū Bakr b. Maʿmar said: I heard the son of Abū ʿUbayda al-Busrī narrate from his father: that he raided in one of the years, and he went out in a raiding party, and the colt he was riding died while he was in the party. He said: "O Lord! Lend it to us until we return to Busrā"—meaning his village—"and behold, the colt was standing. When he raided and returned to Busrā, he said: 'O my son, take the saddle off the colt.' He said: "I said: 'O father, it is sweating.' He said: 'O my son, it is a loan.' When I took the saddle off, the colt fell down dead. In this year also died Ṭālūt b. ʿAbbād and Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sarī al-ʿAsqalānī.
