Ṣāliḥ, the muʾadhdhin of the people of Damascus; ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ḥabīb, the Mālikī jurist, one of the famous; and Muḥammad b. Mihrān al-Rāzī. And Aḥmad b. ʿĀṣim al-Anṭākī, Abū ʿAlī, the preacher and ascetic, one of the devoted worshippers. He has fine words on asceticism and the dealings of hearts. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: He was of the class of al-Ḥārith al-Muḥāsibī and Bishr al-Ḥāfī, and Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī used to call him "the spy of hearts" because of the sharpness of his insight. He related from Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr and his class. From him related Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī, Maḥmūd b. Khālid, Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī, and others. Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī related from him, from Makhlad b. al-Ḥusayn, from Hishām b. Ḥassān, who said: I passed by al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī while he was sitting at the time of saḥar, and I said: O Abū Saʿīd, would someone like you sit at this time?! He said: I had performed wuḍūʾ and I wanted it to stand and pray, but it refused me, and it wanted me to sleep, but I refused it. Among his excellent words is his saying: If you want your heart to be sound, seek help for it by guarding your tongue. He said: It is among the cool booty that you set right what remains of your life so that what has passed of it may be forgiven you. He said: A little certainty removes all doubt from the heart, and a little doubt removes all certainty from it. He said: Whoever is more knowing of God is more fearful of Him. He said: The best companion for you in this world is anxiety, which cuts you off from this world and connects you to the Hereafter. From his poetry, may God have mercy on him: I resolved but did not decide; had I been truthful, I would have decided, but the temptations are severe. Had I intelligence and the certainty of one who is certain, I would not stray from the intended path. Nor would my ambitions be in the doubt of certainty, But how can I stray from the decrees? And also from his poetry: The calls of passion are light upon us, And opposing passion is heavy upon us. Truthfulness has been lost in all places, so that Its description today has no guide. We see no one fearful, so fear would be incumbent upon us, Nor truthful in what he may say. So we remain wavering, bewildered, Seeking truthfulness, but there is no way to it. And also from his poetry: Take it lightly upon yourself, for every matter comes to an end, And release from you the rein of anxiety, and it will be repelled. For every anxiety has after it a relief, And every distress, when it tightens, expands. Indeed, tribulation, even if time prolongs it, Death cuts it off, or it will soon end. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir gave a lengthy biography of him but did not date his death. I have mentioned him here only as an approximation. And God knows best what is correct.
