Sahl in Baghdad, consoling him for his brother and informing him that he had appointed him as his wazīr. No one among the Banū Hāshim or the commanders would oppose any command of al-Ḥasan b. Then al-Ḥasan began reciting: Zakāh has been imposed on what my hand possesses, And the zakāh of my influence is to help and intercede. When you possess, then be generous, and if you cannot, Strive with all your effort to benefit. Ibrāhīm b. ʿArafah said: One of the descendants of al-Ḥasan b. The man complained of his straitened circumstances and mentioned that he had a daughter he wanted to give in marriage. So he took up his pen to sign an order for a thousand dirhams, but he made a mistake and signed for one million dirhams. The water-carrier brought it to his agent, who disapproved. His family was astonished and feared to question him, so they went to Ghassān b. ʿAbbād, who was one of the generous ones, and informed him. He came to him and said: "O amīr, God does not love the wasteful." Al-Ḥasan replied: "There is no waste in goodness." Perhaps God, Mighty and Majestic, has recognized that of me." Al-Ḥākim said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us, saying: The judge Naṣr b. Ziyād said to me: "O Abū Aḥmad, do you know that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq was poisoned for justice, that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was killed for justice, that ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān was killed for justice, that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib was killed for justice, and that ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was poisoned for justice? People refuse to bear justice." Al-Ḥākim said: I heard Abū Ḥāmid Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Muqriʾ the preacher saying: I heard more than one of our shaykhs mention that a man came to Herat and presented a complaint to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. When he stood before him, he said: "Who is your adversary?" He said: "The amīr, may God support him." He said: "What do you claim against me?" He said: "An estate of mine in Herat which the amīr's father seized from me, and it is today in his hands." He said: "Do you have proof?" He said: "Proof is only presented before the judge after the case is brought. If the amīr sees fit, he should bring me and him to the judgment of Islam." He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir called for the judge Naṣr b. Ziyād, then he said to the man: "Make your claim." He said: The man made his claim again and again, but Naṣr b. Ziyād paid no attention to him and did not hear his claim. The amīr realized that he had refrained from hearing the claim until the opponent and the claimant sat together. So ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir rose from his seat until he came with his opponent before him. Then Naṣr said to the claimant: "Make your claim." He said: "May God support the judge. I have an estate in Herat"—and he described it with its boundaries and rights—"it is mine in the amīr's hands." The amīr ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir said to him: "O man, you have changed your claim. You first claimed against my father." The man said: "I did not want to disgrace the amīr's father in the court, saying that the amīr's father seized it from me and that it is today in the amīr's hands." Naṣr b. Ziyād asked ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir about his claim, and he denied it. He turned to the man and said: "Do you have proof?" He said: "No." He said: "Then what do you want?" He said: "The amīr's oath by God, besides whom there is no deity." He said: The amīr rose to his place and ordered the scribe to write to Herat to return the estate to him. Naṣr b.
