Ibrāhīm al-Muṣʿabī Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Muṣʿabī. He was in charge of the shurṭah from the days of al-Maʾmūn until the days of al-Mutawakkil, and he died in this year, his age being fifty-eight years, eight months, and eleven days. It reached us that he entered one day upon al-Mutawakkil while al-Fatḥ b. Khāqān was with him, and the two of them were looking into mixtures of alchemy and exchanging words about it. He did not engage with them in that, so al-Mutawakkil said to him: 'O Abā Isḥāq, what is the matter with you that you do not speak with us on this subject?' He said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, alchemy is something to which no kings before you have exposed themselves, and your forefathers did not look into it. But I shall point you to an alchemy that is the true and sound one.' He said: 'What is it?' He said: 'You lend me fifty thousand dinars [from the treasury], which I shall spend on the interests of the sawād. Then you will see what accrues to you of increase in cultivation.' He said: So he ordered that [fifty thousand dinars] be carried to him from the treasury, and they were carried. Isḥāq departed to Madīnat al-Salām and wrote summoning the notables of the sawād. They attended, and he assigned them the expenditure for dredging the canals and swore that if even a dirham of the money was lost, the one in whose district the loss occurred would be seized. Then he made them swear to act justly, and he increased the protection and the assistance. He spent on the public interests from the total nineteen thousand dinars. When the end of the year came, he worked out the account, and there accrued from the sawād three hundred thousand kurr, four thousand kurr, and twelve million dirhams. They looked, and behold, every dinar had returned two and thirty dinars. He carried that and returned the remainder of the fifty thousand, and he wrote of that to al-Mutawakkil and said: 'This is the alchemy into which the caliphs are obliged to look.' Abū Muḥammad al-Tamīmī Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Maymūn, Abū Muḥammad al-Tamīmī, known by his son as al-Mawṣilī. It is said that he was born in the year one hundred and fifty, and he wrote down hadith from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Hushaym, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, and others. He took adab from al-Aṣmaʿī and Abū ʿUbaydah, and he excelled in the science of singing, so it prevailed over him and he was attributed to it. He was pleasant in conversation, sweet in anecdote, good in poetry, renowned for generosity, and greatly esteemed by the caliphs. He composed the book "al-Aghānī," which was narrated from him by his son Ḥammād, and from him by al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, and others. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī said: I came to Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr with a hundred hadiths that I wanted to read to him. I found in his vestibule a blind man, and he said to me: 'He has made the permission [for me] to enter upon him today delegated to me so that it might benefit me, and you are a man of consequence.' I said to him: 'I have a hundred hadiths, and I will give you a hundred dirhams for them.' He said: 'I am content.' He entered and sought permission for me, so I entered and read the hundred. Abū Muʿāwiyah said to me: 'What you guaranteed to this man he takes from the tails of people, and you are one of their leaders, while he is weak and ailing, and I love to benefit him.' I said [to him]: 'I have made it a hundred dinars.' He said: 'May God reward you well.' So I gave them to him and enriched him. Isḥāq died in Baghdad in this year. He used to ask God, exalted is He, not to afflict him with colic because of what he saw of its severity on his father, for his father died of it. It was shown to him in a dream: 'Your supplication has been answered, and you will not die of colic, but of its opposite.' He was seized by diarrhea in Ramaḍān of this year and died. Ītākh the Amīr Ītākh the Amīr. The mention of his destruction has already preceded. Sulaymān b. Ayyūb, the companion of al-Baṣrī Sulaymān b. Ayyūb, the companion of al-Baṣrī. He related hadith from Ḥammād b. Zayd. He narrated from al-Baghawī. Yaḥyā said: 'Truthful, trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ.' Abū al-Ḥārith al-Marwazī He died in this year. Surayj b. Yūnus b. Ibrāhīm, Abū al-Ḥārith al-Marwazī. He related hadith from Sufyān [b. ʿUyaynah], Hushaym, Ibn ʿUlayyah, and others. Narrated from him: Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj, al-Baghawī, Abū Zurʿah, and others. He was trustworthy and righteous, possessing karamāt. He had imposed upon himself that he would not eat his fill, would not become angry, and would not ask anyone for a need. Hārūn b. Riḍā said: I heard Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Jaʿd say: The grocer of Surayj b. Yūnus related to me: Surayj came to me at night, and a child had been born to him. He gave me three dirhams and said: 'Give me a dirham's worth of honey, a dirham's worth of ghee, and a dirham's worth of sawīq.' I did not have any, and I had set aside the vessels to go early and buy. He said to me: 'Look a little, whatever is in the smoothest jars.' I found the jars and storage vessels full, so I gave him a great deal. He said to me: 'What is this? Did you not say you had nothing?' I said: 'Take it and be silent.' He said: 'I will not take it unless you tell me the truth.' So I told him the story. He said: 'Do not tell anyone about it as long as you live.' Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Khatlī said: I heard Surayj b. Yūnus say: I saw in what the sleeper sees that the people were standing before God, exalted is He, and I was in the first row, and we were looking at the Lord of Might, exalted is He. He said: 'What do you want Me to do with you?' The people were silent. I said to myself: 'Woe to them! He has given them all this from Himself and they are silent.' So I covered my head with my wrap, and I put out one eye and began to walk, and I passed the first row [with steps]. He said to me: 'What do you want?' I said: 'Mercy of a secret by a secret. If You want to punish us, then why did You create us?' He said: 'I created you and will never punish you.' Then He disappeared into the sky. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Sufyān al-Tirmidhī narrated: I heard Surayj b. Yūnus say: I remained for days without eating, neither I nor my children, anything. One day I was sitting in the vestibule when the children came out complaining to me. A neighbor of mine passed by and heard their words, and a purse was thrown to me. I said: 'O so-and-so, when has your habit become this? Take your purse, may God grant you well-being!' The children said: 'Here, it is a ball of spun yarn; sell it so that you can buy bread with it.' I went out and sold it and bought bread for them. I knew it would not suffice them, so I did not eat with them. Then I laid my head down and slept. An angel came to me and said: 'Arise.' It was as if he brought me a platter of gold with bread the like of which I had never seen in this world, and honeycomb and cream. He said to me: 'Eat.' I ate and remained for days not desiring food. Surayj died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. Abū al-Faḍl al-Baghawī Shujāʿ b. Makhlad, Abū al-Faḍl al-Baghawī. A pulpit was set up for him in the mosque of al-Ruṣāfah, and he sat upon it and said from memory: 'Ḥaddathanā Sharīk.' Then he said: 'This is Baghdad, and I fear that a foot may slip after it was firmly planted. O Abā Shaybah, bring the book.' Aḥmad said: Abū Shaybah is his son, and his name is Ibrāhīm. From Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim b. Sallām, he said: Hadith ultimately came to four: Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, [and ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī]. Abū Bakr was the most extensive of them in hadith, Aḥmad the most learned in jurisprudence concerning it, Yaḥyā the most comprehensive of it, and ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī the most knowledgeable of it. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah and Yaḥyā came to us while ʿAbd al-Raḥmān remained. The disappointed one—meaning Sulaymān al-Shādhakūnī—wanted to engage him in mutual discussion. The people gathered in the congregational mosque at the column, and Abū Bakr and his brother, Mashkadānah, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Barāʾ, and others, all of them were silent except Abū Bakr, for he was roaring. Ibn ʿAdī said: The column is the one at which Ibn Saʿīd used to sit. [Ibn Saʿīd said: It is the column of [ʿAbd Allāh] b. Masʿūd. After him ʿAlqamah sat at it, after him Ibrāhīm, [after him Manṣūr], after him al-Thawrī, after him Wakīʿ, after him [Abū Bakr] b. He was trustworthy. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī said: I almost never missed the night prayer in congregation. A guest came to me and I was occupied with him. I went out seeking the prayer among the tribes of Basra, and behold, the people had already prayed. I said to myself: It has been narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: 'The congregational prayer surpasses the prayer of an individual by twenty-one degrees,' and it has been narrated twenty-five, and it has been narrated twenty-seven. I returned to my house and prayed the night prayer twenty-seven times. Then I slept and saw myself with a group of people riding horses, and I was riding a horse like their horses. We were racing and their horses were outpacing my horse. I began to strike it to catch up with them. One of them turned to me and said: 'Do not exert yourself; you will not catch up with us.' I said: 'And why [is that]?' He said: 'Because we prayed the night prayer in congregation.' Ḥafṣ b. ʿAmr al-Ribālī said: I saw ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī in my sleep after his death, and I said: 'What has God done with you?' He said: 'He forgave me and reproached me, and said: "O ʿUbayd Allāh, did you take from these people?" I said: "O Lord, You made me need them, and had You not made me need them I would not have taken." He said: "When they come to Us, We shall reward them on your behalf." He was born in the year one hundred and thirty-five. He used to say: 'God's knowledge is God, and God's power is God, and the bliss of Paradise will perish, and the people of Paradise will have their movements cut off therein so that they will not utter a word.' He was a dissolute person in the matter of religion. He narrated hadiths from Sulaymān b. Qarm and Ghiyāth b. Ibrāhīm, and they are both liars like him. Abū Yaʿqūb al-Shaḥḥām narrated: Abū al-Hudhayl said to me: 'The first time I engaged in theological debate I was less than fifteen years old. I used to frequent ʿUthmān al-Ṭawīl, the companion of Wāṣil b. ʿAṭāʾ. It reached me that a Jewish man had come to Basra and had defeated most of their mutakallimūn. I said to my uncle: "O uncle, take me to this Jew so that I may debate with him." He said to me: "O my son, this Jew has overcome a group of the mutakallimūn of Basra. Is it your earnest wish to debate with someone whose speech you cannot withstand?" I said: "You must take me to him. There is no harm to you whether he defeats me or I defeat him." So he took me by the hand, and we entered upon the Jew. I found him convincing the people who debated with him of the prophethood of Moses, then he would deny the prophethood of our Prophet ﷺ and say: "We are upon what we agreed upon regarding the soundness of the prophethood of Moses until we agree upon the prophethood of another, then we will acknowledge it." He said: I entered upon him and said to him: 'Shall I ask you or will you ask me?' He said to me: 'O my son, do you not see what I do to your elders?' I said to him: 'Leave this aside and choose, either you ask me, or I ask you.' He said: 'Rather, I shall ask.' 'Tell me, is not Moses a prophet from among the prophets of God, exalted is He, whose prophethood is sound and whose proof is established? Do you acknowledge this or deny it, and thus contradict your companion?' I said [to him]: 'That which you ask me about concerning the matter of Moses is, in my view, of two cases. One of them is: I acknowledge the prophethood of Moses who reported the soundness of the prophethood of our Prophet [Muḥammad ﷺ], commanded following him, gave glad tidings of him and of his prophethood. If it is about this that you ask me, then I acknowledge his prophethood. But if the Moses about whom you ask me does not acknowledge the prophethood of our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, did not command us to follow him, and did not give glad tidings of him, then I do not know him and do not acknowledge his prophethood. Rather, in my view, he is a disgraced devil.' He was bewildered by what my words brought upon him, and he said to me: 'What do you say about the Torah?' I said: 'The matter of the Torah is also, in my view, of two aspects. If it is the Torah that was sent down upon Moses the prophet who acknowledged the prophethood of our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, then it is the true Torah. But if it was sent down upon the one you claim, then it is false and not true, and I do not believe in it.' He said to me: "I need to tell you something between me and you." I thought he would say something good, so I approached him, and he whispered to me: "Your mother is such and such, and the mother of the one who taught you. He does not use a kunya." He intended that I would leap at him, then he would say: "They attacked me and caused trouble against me." So I turned to those in the gathering and said: "Do you not acknowledge his questioning me and my answer to him?" They said: "Yes." I said: "Is it not incumbent upon him to respond to my answer?" They said: "Yes." I said: "When he whispered to me, he insulted me with an insult that necessitates the prescribed punishment, and he insulted the one who taught me. He only intended that I would rise and leap at him, and then he would claim that we attacked him and caused trouble against him. I have made known to you his affair after his defeat." Then hands took hold of him, and sandals, and he fled from Basra. He had many gardens, and he left them and departed because of the disgrace that befell him. From al-Jāḥiẓ, he said: Thieves encountered a group among whom was Abū al-Hudhayl, and they shouted: "Our clothes are gone!" He said: "And why? Bring the proof to me, for by God, they will never take them." They thought they were Kharijites who seize by means of disputation, so they said: "They are thieves who take clothes without proof." He said: "The clothes are indeed gone, by God." Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā al-Munajjim said: My father informed me, saying: A highwayman met Abū al-Hudhayl and said to him: "Take off your clothes," and he grabbed the collar of his shirt. Abū al-Hudhayl said: "The question has become absurd." He said: "And why?" He said: "You hold the place of removal and say, 'Take off.' Clarify for me: shall I remove the shirt from its hem or from its collar?" He said to him: "Are you Abū al-Hudhayl?" He said: "Yes!" He said: "Then go away, rightly guided." Abū al-Hudhayl died in the year 235 AH, having completed one hundred years. In that year died Ismāʿīl b. ʿUlayya and Manṣūr b. Abī Muzāḥim.
