The Year 235 AH
Translation
✧ Then the year 235 AH began. Among the events of this year: The killing of Ītākh. We have already mentioned that he sought permission to perform the pilgrimage, and permission was granted to him. When he returned from the pilgrimage to Iraq, al-Mutawakkil sent to him Saʿīd b. Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥājib with clothing and gifts, and ordered him to meet him on part of the road. Al-Mutawakkil had previously instructed his governor over the police in Baghdad, Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, regarding him. When Isḥāq went out and Ītākh drew near to Baghdad, he wanted to take the Euphrates road to al-Anbār, then go out to Sāmarrā. Isḥāq wrote to him: “The Commander of the Faithful has ordered that you enter Baghdad, and that the Banū Hāshim and the notables of the people meet you, and that you hold an assembly for them in the house of Khuzayma b. Khāzim, and command gifts for them.” Isḥāq filled the bridge with troops and shākiriyya, and went out with his own retinue to meet him. When he saw him, Isḥāq leaned down to dismount, but Ītākh swore that he should not do so. Ītākh was accompanied by three hundred of his companions and servants. They rode together until, when he reached the bridge, Isḥāq went ahead and crossed, then stood at the door of Khuzayma b. Khāzim and told Ītākh to enter. Those stationed at the bridge would let through each servant of Ītākh as he passed, until he remained with only his personal servants. He entered, and the house of Khuzayma had been furnished for him. Isḥāq stayed back and ordered that no more than three or four of his servants enter the house with him. The doors were closed upon him, guards were ordered to watch him from the riverbank, and every staircase in the palace of Khuzayma was cut off. As soon as he entered, he closed the door behind him and looked; only three servants were with him. He said: “They have done it.” He remained for two or three days. Then Isḥāq rode in a ḥarrāqa and prepared another for Ītākh, then sent word to him to come to the ḥarrāqa. He ordered that his sword be taken, and he was brought to Isḥāq's house. He was taken to a part of it, then shackled; eighty raṭls were placed on his neck. He died on Wednesday night, five nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhira. Isḥāq called as witnesses to his death Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. Thābit, the ṣāḥib al-barīd in Baghdad, and the judges, and showed him to them with no beating or mark on him. It was said that he perished of thirst. His two sons were imprisoned with him, and they remained until al-Muntaṣir came to power and released them. Mention of the capture of Ibn al-Buʿayth and his death In this year, Bughā al-Sharābī arrived with Ibn al-Buʿayth in Shawwāl, along with his deputy Abū al-Agharr, his brothers Ṣaqr and Khālid, his secretary al-ʿAlāʾ, and a group of his followers. When they approached Sāmarrā, they were mounted on camels so the people could see them. When Ibn al-Buʿayth was brought before al-Mutawakkil, he ordered that his neck be struck. The executioner came, and al-Mutawakkil reviled him, saying: “What led you to do what you did?” He said: “Wretchedness. You are the rope stretched between God and His creation. I have two thoughts about you, and the one that comes first to my heart is the one most worthy of you—namely, pardon.” Then he said without pause: People insist that today you will kill me, O imam of guidance, yet forgiveness is more beautiful for a man. Am I anything but a lump molded from sin, While your pardon is molded from the light of prophethood? You are the best of those who race to lofty heights, And there is no doubt that the best of doers, you will act. Al-Mutawakkil said to one of his companions: “He possesses some literary culture.” He replied: “Rather, let the Commander of the Faithful act and bestow favor upon him.” So he ordered that he be returned, and he was imprisoned in shackles. It is said that al-Muʿtazz interceded for him with his father, and he released him. Al-Buʿayth, when he fled, had said: How many affairs have I accomplished that others neglected, While bankruptcy seized the very breath. Do not blame me, for my wealth no longer profits me; Away from me—fate has run its course with the pen. I will squander wealth in hardship and in ease; Truly the generous man is he who gives even in want. Ibn al-Buʿayth died a month after entering Sāmarrā. It is said that a hundred raṭls had been placed on his neck, and he remained face down until he died. His sons Julays and Ṣaqr, and al-Buʿayth, were enrolled among the shākiriyya with ʿUbayd Allāh b.
