وَفِيهَا قَتَلَ الْمَأْمُونُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، وَكَانَ سَبَبَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمَأْمُونَ كَانَ اسْتَعْمَلَهُ عَلَى أَذْرَبِيجَانَ وَغَيْرِهَا، كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُهُ، فَبَلَغَهُ ظُلْمُهُ، وَأَخْذُهُ الْأَمْوَالَ، وَقَتْلُهُ الرِّجَالَ، فَوَجَّهَ إِلَيْهِ عُجَيْفَ بْنَ عَنْبَسَةَ، فَثَارَ بِهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَأَرَادَ قَتْلَهُ وَاللِّحَاقَ بِبَابَكَ، وَظَفِرَ بِهِ عُجَيْفٌ، وَقَدِمَ بِهِ عَلَى الْمَأْمُونِ فَقَتَلَهُ وَقَتَلَ أَخَاهُ حَبِيبًا فِي جُمَادَى الْأُولَى، وَطِيفَ بِرَأْسِ عَلِيٍّ فِي الْعِرَاقِ، وَخُرَاسَانَ، وَالشَّامِ، وَمِصْرَ، ثُمَّ أُلْقِيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ.
Translation
✧ In this year al-Maʾmūn killed ʿAlī b. Hishām. The reason for that was that al-Maʾmūn had appointed him over Adharbayjān and elsewhere, as has been mentioned previously. Reports of his oppression, seizure of wealth, and killing of men reached him, so he dispatched ʿUjayf b. ʿAnbasah against him. ʿAlī b. Hishām rose up against him, intending to kill him and join Bābak. ʿUjayf got the better of him, brought him to al-Maʾmūn, and he killed him and killed his brother Ḥabīb in Jumādā al-Ūlā. The head of ʿAlī was paraded through Iraq, Khurāsān, Syria, and Egypt, then thrown into the sea.
