Translation
✧ In it, al-Maʾmūn rode to the land of the Byzantines again. He besieged Luʾluʾa for one hundred days, then departed from it and appointed ʿUjayf over its siege. The Byzantines tricked him and captured him, and he remained in their hands for eight days. Then he escaped from their hands and continued besieging them. The king of the Byzantines came himself and surrounded his army from behind. News reached al-Maʾmūn, and he marched to him. When Tawfīl sensed his arrival, he turned away fleeing from him and sent to him the vizier called al-Ṣanghal. He asked him for safety, reconciliation, and truce, but he began with himself in his letter to al-Maʾmūn, so al-Maʾmūn replied to him with an eloquent letter whose content was rebuke and reproach: "I will only accept from you entry into the Ḥanīfiyya; otherwise, the sword and killing. Peace be upon those who follow guidance."
