Translation

✧ Then the year 216 AH commenced. Mention of the conquest of Heraclea In this year, al-Maʾmūn returned to the Byzantine lands. The reason for that was that news reached him that the Byzantine emperor had killed one thousand six hundred of the people of Ṭarsūs and al-Maṣṣīṣa. So he marched until he entered Byzantine territory in Jumādā al-Ūlā, and he remained there until the middle of Shaʿbān. It was said: The reason for his entering it was that the Byzantine emperor wrote to him and began with himself [i.e., put his own name first]. So he marched against him and did not read his letter. When he entered Byzantine territory, he encamped at Antioch, and they came out under a peace agreement. Then he marched to Heraclea, and its people came out under a peace agreement. He dispatched his brother Abū Isḥāq al-Muʿtaṣim, who conquered thirty fortresses and Maṭmūra. He dispatched Yaḥyā b. Aktham from Ṭuwāna, and he raided, killed, and burned, capturing prisoners, then returned. Then al-Maʾmūn marched to Kaysūm, where he stayed for two days, then departed for Damascus.
