✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. 1212 - [Ishāq b. ʿĪsā b. Najīḥ, Abū Yaʿqūb, known as Ibn al-Ṭabbāʿ. He heard Mālik b. Anas, Sharīk b. ʿAbd Allāh, and others. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal narrated from him, and he was truthful. He moved at the end of his life to Adana, where he remained until he died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year]. 1213 - Saʿīd b. Aws b. Thābit, Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī. He was a scholar of grammar and lexicography. He transmitted from Shuʿbah and Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ. Abū ʿUbaydah and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy and reliable, from the people of Basra, and he came to Baghdad. Abū ʿUthmān] al-Māzinī said: We were with Abū Zayd when al-Aṣmaʿī came and bent over his head and sat down, saying: "This is our scholar and our teacher for thirty years." [While] we were thus, Khalaf al-Aḥmar entered, bent over his head, sat down, and said: "This is our scholar and our teacher for ten years." Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah said: We were with Shuʿbah when he grew weary of ḥadīth; he cast his gaze and saw Abū Zayd among the last of the people. He said: "O Abū Zayd: The abode of Mayy has become dumb; it does not speak to us, Though the abode, if it spoke to us, has tales to tell. Come to me, O Abū Zayd," and the two began reciting poetry to each other. Some of the ḥadīth scholars said to Shuʿbah: "O Abū Bisṭām, we cut across the backs of camels to hear from you the ḥadīth of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and you leave us and turn to poetry?" He said: I saw Shuʿbah become extremely angry, then he said: "O people, I know better what is best for me. By God, besides whom there is no god, I am more sound in this than you." Al-Māzinī said: I heard Abū Zayd al-Naḥwī say: I stopped at a butcher's, and he had brought out two fat, plump bellies and hung them. I said: "How much for the two bellies?" He said: "For two slaps, you old farter!" So I covered my head and fled, lest people hear and laugh. Zayd, Sharīk, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak. He memorized the books of Ibn al-Mubārak and shared many of his transmitters. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā, and Abū Khaythamah narrated from him, and he was a compiler. He died in Merv this year. 1216 - Qabīṣah b. ʿUqbah, Abū ʿĀmir al-Suwāʾī. Of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah. He heard al-Thawrī and Ḥammād b. Salamah. Aḥmad [b. Ḥanbal] and others narrated from him. He was a righteous, trustworthy man of many ḥadīths [with a strong memory]. They criticized his hearing from Sufyān [al-Thawrī], saying he was then young. From Jaʿfar b. Ḥamrawayh: We were at the door of Qabīṣah, and with us was Dalaf Abū ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz with servants. He went to Qabīṣah and knocked on the door. Qabīṣah was slow to come out, and the servants knocked again. It was said: "The son of the king of [the mountain] is at the door, and you do not come out to him?" He came out with crumbs of bread at the edge of his waist-wrapper and said: "A man who is content with this from the world—what would he do with the son of the king of the mountain? By God, I will not narrate to him." And he did not narrate to him. Dāwūd:] He said: Al-Maʾmūn sent to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī fifty thousand dirhams and ordered him to distribute them among the poor of Basra. Hilāl b. Muslim spoke on behalf of his companions, and al-Anṣārī said: "I spoke on behalf of my companions." Hilāl said: "It is for me and my companions," and I said: "It is for me and my companions." We differed. I said to Hilāl: "How do you recite the tashahhud?" Hilāl said: "Would someone like me be asked about the tashahhud?" He recited it according to the ḥadīth of Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Anṣārī said: "Who narrated this to you, and from where is it established with you?" Hilāl remained silent. Al-Anṣārī said: "You pray five prayers every day and night and repeat these words, yet you do not know who narrated them from your Prophet ﷺ? God has distanced you from fiqh." Then al-Anṣārī distributed it among his companions. 1218 - Makkī b. Ibrāhīm b. Bishr b. Farqad, Abū al-Sakan al-Barjamī al-Ḥanẓalī al-Tamīmī. From the people of Balkh. He heard Bahz b. Had I known that people would need what I wrote, I would not have written from anyone besides the Followers." From Makkī b. Ibrāhīm: He said: "I crossed the desert from Balkh to Makkah as a pilgrim fifty times, and I spent more than one thousand two hundred dinars on rent for houses in Makkah." They said: "No." He said: "Do you suspect me?" They said: "No." He said: "I enjoin you—will you accept?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Adhere to what the people of ḥadīth are upon, for I have seen the truth with them. I do not mean the leaders, but these ragged ones. Do you not see that one of them goes to their leader and corrects his error and exposes his faults?" Abū Bakr b. al-Ashʿath said: The most knowledgeable of people in kalām after Ḥafṣ al-Qurad was al-Karābīsī, and Ḥusayn al-Karābīsī [had] learned kalām from him.
