Translation

✧ Mention of the situation of Abū Dulaf with al-Maʾmūn Abū Dulaf was one of the companions of Muḥammad al-Amīn, and he marched with ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Māhān to war against Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn. When ʿAlī was killed, Abū Dulaf returned to Hamadhān, and Ṭāhir corresponded with him, seeking to win him over and calling him to give allegiance to al-Maʾmūn, but he did not do so. He said: "There is an oath of allegiance upon my neck for which I find no way to annul, but I shall remain in my place, not siding with either of the two parties if you hold back from me." He assented to that, so he stayed in Karaj. When al-Maʾmūn went out to al-Rayy, he corresponded with Abū Dulaf summoning him, so he journeyed toward him exerting himself while in fear and severe dread. His family, his people, and his companions said to him: "You are the chief of the Arabs, and all of them obey you. If you are afraid, then stay, and we will protect you." He did not do so, and he set out saying: I give my own life in defense of my people, averting What befell them of old, and I charge into calamities And I plunge into the fearful affair with its plunging So that I may attain glory or return again as one laid low. These are fine verses. When he reached al-Maʾmūn, he honored him, treated him well, granted him safety, and elevated his rank.
