✧ Mention of the appointment of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir over Khurasan In this year, al-Maʾmūn appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir over Khurasan, and he set out to it. The reason for his going to it was that when his brother Ṭalḥah died, ʿAlī b. Ṭāhir took charge of Khurasan as deputy for his brother ʿAbd Allāh, while ʿAbd Allāh was at al-Dīnawar preparing the armies against Bābak. The Kharijites in Khurasan fell upon the people of the village of al-Ḥamrāʾ near Naysābūr and killed many among them. That reached al-Maʾmūn, so he ordered ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir to go to Khurasan. He set out to it. When he arrived at Naysābūr, its people had been suffering drought, and they received rain one day before his arrival there. When he entered it, a draper stood up to him and said: The people suffered drought in their time, until when you came, you brought pearls; two rains came upon us at once—the amir and the rain. So welcome to the amir and the rain. ʿAbd Allāh summoned him and said to him, "Are you a poet?" He said, "No, but I heard them at al-Raqqah and memorized them." He treated him kindly and granted him the right that nothing of clothing would be purchased for him except by his command.
