Translation
✧ Then the year 214 AH commenced. Account of the killing of Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī In it, Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd al-Ṭūsī was killed; Bābak al-Khurramī killed him. The reason for this is that when he had finished with the matter of the rebels on his route to Bābak, he marched towards him, having gathered the armies, equipment, and provisions. A great multitude of volunteers from all the amṣār gathered with him, and he took the mountain passes towards Bābak. Every time he passed a pass or a steep road, he left on it someone from his companions to guard it, until he camped at Hashtādsar. He dug a trench and consulted about entering the country of Bābak. They advised him to enter it from a direction they mentioned to him, and he accepted their opinion. He arranged his companions: he placed Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭāʾī, known as Abū Saʿīd, over the center; al-Saʿdī b. Aṣram over the right wing; and al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Yaqṭīnī over the left wing. Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd stood behind them with a group, watching them and ordering them to fill any gap if he saw one. Bābak was overlooking them from the mountain, and he had hidden men in ambush under every rock. When Muḥammad's companions advanced and climbed the mountain for about three farsakhs, the ambushers came out against them, and Bābak descended upon them with those who were with him. The people fled, so Abū Saʿīd and Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd ordered them to be steadfast, but they did not do so; they fled headlong, and the killing took them. Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd remained steadfast in his place, and all those who were with him fled except one man. The two of them went seeking deliverance, and he saw a group fighting, so he made for them. He saw the Khurramiyya fighting a party of his companions. When the Khurramiyya saw him, they made for him because of the fine appearance of his gear. He fought them and they fought him, and they struck his horse with a javelin, so he fell to the ground, and they fell upon Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd and killed him. Muḥammad was praised and generous, and the poets elegized him copiously, among them al-Ṭāʾī. When the news of his killing reached al-Maʾmūn, it became grave in his sight. So al-Maʾmūn sent Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm and Yaḥyā b. Aktham to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, giving him the choice between Khurāsān and the deputyship over al-Jibāl, Adharbayjān, and Arminīya, to fight Bābak. He chose to remain in Khurāsān because of its great need for control and out of fear of the Khawārij appearing there.
