The story of ʿĪsā b. Maryam (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ Mention of words from what was revealed to ʿĪsā ﷺ From one of the People of the Book who embraced Islam, he said: Allah Almighty revealed to ʿĪsā: O ʿĪsā son of Maryam, remember Me in this world and I will remember you in the hereafter; apply kohl to your eye with the probe of sorrow; be watchful for Me in the hours of the night; make Me hear the sweetness of the Gospel. When you enter one of My mosques, let your heart tremble in fear of Me, and let your limbs humble themselves to Me. And say to your people when they enter one of My mosques: do not enter except with fearful hearts, humble lowered eyes, and hands pure from filth. And inform them that I do not answer the supplication of the wrongdoer until he returns the wrong to its owner. O ʿĪsā, do not sit with sinners until they repent. [O ʿĪsā, I remember everyone who remembers Me, and I curse the wrongdoers when they remember Me]. And from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwsajah, who said: Allah revealed to ʿĪsā son of Maryam: make Me a concern from yourself, and make Me a treasure for you in your hereafter, and draw near to Me with supererogatory works and I will love you, and do not turn to other than Me lest I forsake you. Be patient with affliction and content with destiny, and be for My delight in you, for My delight is that I be obeyed and not disobeyed. Be near to Me, revive My remembrance with your tongue, and let My love be in your breast. Be watchful in the hours of heedlessness, and judge for Me with subtle discernment, and be desirous and fearful toward Me. Mortify your heart out of awe of Me, tend the night for the right of My delight, and make your day thirsty for the day of quenching with Me. Strive in good deeds with all your effort, acknowledge good wherever you turn, and stand among creation with My sincere counsel, and judge among My servants with My justice, for I have sent down upon you healing for the whisperings of hearts from the sickness of forgetfulness, and clearing of sight from the veil of weariness. Do not be a worn and abject one as though you were seized while you are alive and breathing. O ʿĪsā son of Maryam, no creature has believed in Me except that it has humbled itself, and none has humbled itself to Me except that it has hoped for My reward, so I bear witness to you that it is safe from My punishment as long as it does not alter or change My way. O ʿĪsā son of Maryam, the firstborn of the virgin: weep over yourself during the days of life with the weeping of one who has bidden farewell to his family, despised the world, left pleasures to their people, and whose desire has risen toward what is with his God. And in that, soften speech and spread peace, and be wakeful when the eyes of the righteous sleep, in caution of what is coming of the matter of the hereafter and the quakes of severe terrors, before family and wealth are of no use. Apply kohl to your eye with the probe of sorrow when the idle laugh, and be in that patient and expectant of reward, so blessed are you if you attain what I have promised the patient. Weigh the world by Allah day by day, and taste the flavor of what has escaped you—where is its taste?—and what has not come to you—how is its pleasure? So weigh the world by sufficiency, and let the rough and coarse of it suffice you. You have seen what it comes to. Act with reckoning, for you will be questioned. If your eye saw what I have prepared for My righteous friends, your heart would melt and your soul would depart.
