Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of al-Sayyid b. Anas In this year, al-Sayyid b. Anas al-Azdī, governor of al-Mawṣil, was killed. The reason for his killing was that Zurayq b. ʿAlī b. Ṣadaqah al-Azdī al-Mawṣilī had seized control of the mountains between al-Mawṣil and Adharbayjān, and many wars took place between him and al-Sayyid. When this year came, Zurayq gathered a large force, said to have been forty thousand, and dispatched them to al-Mawṣil to fight al-Sayyid. He went out against them with four thousand. They met at Sūq al-Aḥad. When al-Sayyid saw them, he charged them alone, and this was his custom, to charge alone by himself. A man from Zurayq's companions charged him, and they fought, and each one of them killed his opponent; no one else was killed. This man had sworn by divorce that if he saw al-Sayyid he would charge him and kill him or be killed before him; because he had from Zurayq every year one hundred thousand dirhams. It was said to him, "For what reason do you take this money?" He said, "Because whenever I see al-Sayyid, I will kill him," and he swore to that and fulfilled it. When al-Maʾmūn learned of his killing, he became angry at that, and appointed Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd al-Ṭūsī to wage war against Zurayq and Bābak al-Khurramī, and placed him in charge of al-Mawṣil.
