✧ Mention of the strife between ʿĀmir and Manṣūr and the killing of Manṣūr in Ifrīqiya In this year the disagreement occurred between ʿĀmir b. Nāfiʿ and Manṣūr b. Naṣr in Ifrīqiya. The reason for that was that Manṣūr was very envious… And he marched with them from Tunis to [Manṣūr], who was in his palace at Ṭunbudha, and besieged him until the water he had was exhausted. Manṣūr sent to him seeking a guarantee of safe conduct on condition that he board a ship and head east. He agreed to that, so Manṣūr went out at the beginning of the night secretly, heading for al-Urbus. When ʿĀmir awoke and saw no trace of Manṣūr, he sought him until he caught up with him. They fought, and Manṣūr was defeated. He entered al-Urbus and fortified himself there. ʿĀmir besieged him and set up a mangonel against him. When the siege became severe on the people of al-Urbus, they said to Manṣūr: "Either you leave us, or we will hand you over to ʿĀmir, for the siege has harmed us." He asked them for a delay to set his affairs in order, so they granted him delay. He sent to ʿAbd al-Salām b. al-Mufarrij, one of the army commanders, asking to meet with him. He came to him, and Manṣūr spoke to him from atop the wall, apologizing and asking him to obtain a guarantee of safe conduct from ʿĀmir so that he might travel east. ʿAbd al-Salām agreed to that, interceded with ʿĀmir on his behalf, and he granted him safe conduct on condition that he travel to Tunis, take his family and retinue, and go with them east. So he went out to him, and he sent him with cavalry to Tunis. He ordered his messenger secretly to take him to the city of Jarba and imprison him there. He did that, and imprisoned his brother Ḥamdūn with him. When ʿAbd al-Salām learned of that, it weighed heavily on him. ʿĀmir wrote to his brother, who was his governor of Jarba, ordering him to kill Manṣūr and his brother Ḥamdūn, without any review of their case. He came to them and read them the letter. Manṣūr asked him for an inkwell and paper to write his will, so he ordered that for him. But he was unable to write and said: "The slain one has won the good of this world and the next." Then he killed them both and sent their heads to his brother. Affairs became stable for ʿĀmir b. Nāfiʿ. ʿAbd al-Salām b. al-Mufarrij returned to the city of Bāja, and ʿĀmir b. Nāfiʿ remained in the city of Tunis. He died at the end of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir in the year 214. When news of his death reached Ziyādat Allāh, he said: "Now war has laid down its burdens." His sons sent to Ziyādat Allāh seeking safe conduct, and he granted them safe conduct and treated them well.
