The story of ʿĪsā b. Maryam (peace be upon him)

Translation

✧ From Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī, who said: The disciples lost their prophet ʿĪsā, and it was said to them: He headed toward the sea. So they set off seeking him. When they reached the sea, there he was walking on the water, the wave lifting him once and lowering him another, and upon him was a cloak, wrapped in half of it and wrapped around his waist with half of it, until he reached them. Then one of them said to him — Abū Hilāl said: I thought he was one of their most virtuous —: Shall I not come to you, O Prophet of God? He said: Yes. He said: So he placed one of his feet on the water, then went to place the other, and said: Alas, I have drowned, O Prophet of God. He said: Show me your hand, O short of faith. If the son of Adam had a grain of barley's weight of certainty, he would walk on the water. And from al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ, who said: It was said to ʿĪsā b. Maryam: O ʿĪsā, by what thing do you walk on the water? He said: By faith and certainty. They said: We have believed as you believed, and attained certainty as you attained certainty. He said: Then walk. He said: So they walked with him in the wave and drowned. Then ʿĪsā said to them: What is the matter with you? They said: We feared the wave. He said: Would you not fear the Lord of the wave? He said: Then he brought them out, then struck his hand to the ground, seized with it, then opened it, and behold, in one of his hands was gold, and in the other was clay or pebbles. He said: Which of the two is sweeter in your hearts? They said: This gold. He said: Indeed, they are both equal to me.
