ذِكْرُ مَا كَانَ مِنَ الْأَنْدَلُسِ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ وَقَعَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ، صَاحِبُ الْأَنْدَلُسِ، بِجُنْدِ الْبَصْرَةِ وَأَهْلِهَا، وَهِيَ الْوَقْعَةُ [ الْمَعْرُوفَةُ ] بِوَقْعَةِ بَالِسَ ( ! ). وَكَانَ سَبَبَهَا أَنَّ الْحَكَمَ كَانَ قَدْ بَلَغَهُ عَنْ عَامِلٍ اسْمُهُ رَبِيعٌ أَنَّهُ ظَلَمَ الْأَبْنَاءَ أَهْلَ الذِّمَّةِ، فَقَبَضَ عَلَيْهِ وَصَلَبَهُ، قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ، فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ وَوَلِيَ ابْنُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ سَمِعَ النَّاسُ بِصَلْبِ الرَّبِيعِ، فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَى قُرْطُبَةَ مِنَ النَّوَاحِي يَطْلُبُونَ الْأَمْوَالَ الَّتِي كَانَ ظَلَمَهُمْ بِهَا، ظَنًّا مِنْهُمْ أَنَّهَا تُرَدُّ إِلَيْهِمْ، وَكَانَ أَهْلُ إِلْبِيرَةَ أَكْثَرَهُمْ طَلَبًا وَإِلْحَاحًا فِيهِ، وَتَأَلَّبُوا، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ مَنْ يُفَرِّقُهُمْ وَيُسْكِتُهُمْ، فَلَمْ يَقْبَلُوا، وَدَفَعُوا مَنْ أَتَاهُمْ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ جَمْعٌ مِنَ الْجُنْدِ وَأَصْحَابُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، فَقَاتَلُوهُمْ، فَانْهَزَمَ جُنْدُ إِلْبِيرَةَ وَمَنْ مَعَهُمْ، وَقُتِلُوا قَتْلًا ذَرِيعًا، وَنَجَا الْبَاقُونَ مُنْهَزِمِينَ، ثُمَّ طُلِبُوا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، فَقَتَلُوا كَثِيرًا مِنْهُمْ.
Translation
✧ Mention of what occurred in al-Andalus during this year In this year, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥakam, ruler of al-Andalus, fell upon the army of al-Baṣrah and its people, and it is the battle [known as] the Battle of Bālis (!). The cause was that al-Ḥakam had heard about a governor named Rabīʿ that he wronged the protected people (ahl al-dhimmah). He arrested him and crucified him before his death. When he died and his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān succeeded, the people heard of the crucifixion of Rabīʿ. They came to Qurṭubah from the regions demanding the wealth he had wronged them of, thinking it would be returned to them. The people of Ilbīrah were the most demanding and insistent in this, and they banded together. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent someone to disperse them and silence them, but they refused and repelled those who came to them. A group of the army and companions of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān went out against them and fought them. The army of Ilbīrah and those with them were defeated and killed in great numbers, and the rest fled. Then they were pursued afterwards, and many of them were killed.
