Translation

✧ Mention of the prominent persons who died in this year 1137 - Isḥāq b. Bishr [b. Muḥammad] b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sālim, Abū Ḥudhayfah al-Bukhārī. A client of Banū Hāshim. He was born in Balkh, and settled in Bukhārā, so he was attributed to it. He is the author of the book "al-Mubtadaʾ" (The Beginning) and the book "al-Futūḥ" (The Conquests). He narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Abī ʿArūbah, Juwaybir, Muqātil b. Sulaymān, [Mālik], al-Thawrī, and a group of the scholars, with false ḥadīths. He used to narrate from people who had died before he was born, so the ḥadīth scholars paid no attention to his transmission. He died in Rajab of this year in Bukhārā. 1138 - Buhaym al-ʿIjlī, whose kunyah is Abū Bakr. He narrated from Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī. He was an ascetic in worldly matters, much devoted to worship, abundant in weeping, upon him were the marks of grief and gloom. From Muʿādh b. Ziyād, who said: When ʿAbbādān was built, a group of devout worshippers settled in it, among them a man called Buhaym. He was a sorrowful man; he would sigh a sigh that could be heard. Muḥammad said: Mikhwal narrated to me, saying: One day Buhaym came to me and said: "Do you know a man among your brothers and neighbors who intends to perform the ḥajj, whom you approve of, to accompany me?" I said: "Yes." So I took him to a man of the tribe who had righteousness and religion, and I brought them together, and they agreed to accompany each other. Then Buhaym departed to his family. Later, the man came to me and said: "O you, I would like you to keep your companion away from me, and let him seek a companion other than me." I said: "Woe to you, why? By God, I do not know anyone in Kufa who matches him in good character and forbearance." "Indeed I traveled by sea with him and saw nothing but good." He said: "Woe to you, I have been told that he weeps excessively and hardly stops; this will spoil our life during our entire journey." He said: I said: "Woe to you, weeping occurs only at times of remembrance; the heart softens and the man weeps. Do you not weep sometimes?" He said: "Yes, but I have heard about him something very great regarding the abundance of his weeping." He said: I said: "Accompany him, perhaps you will benefit from him." He said: "I will ask God for guidance." When the day came on which they intended to depart, the camels were brought and prepared for them. Buhaym sat in the shade of a wall, placed his hand under his beard, and his tears began to flow onto his cheeks, then onto his beard, then onto his chest, until by God I saw his tears upon the ground. He said: My companion said to me: "O Mikhwal, your companion has begun; this is not a companion for me." He said: I said: "Be gentle; perhaps he remembered his family and his separation from them and was moved." Buhaym heard us and said: "By God, my brother, it is not that; rather, I remembered thereby the journey to the hereafter." He said: And his voice rose with sobbing. He said: My companion said to me: "By God, this is not the first of your enmity toward me and your hatred of me. What do I have to do with Buhaym? You should have paired Buhaym with Dāwūd al-Ṭāʾī and Salām Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, so that they might weep to one another until they are healed or die together." He said: And I did not cease to be gentle with him. I said: "Woe to you, perhaps it will be the best journey you have ever traveled." He said: And he was a frequent performer of the ḥajj, a righteous man, except that he was a wealthy merchant concerned with his affairs, and he was not a man of grief or weeping. He said: Then he said to me: "This time of mine has occurred, and perhaps it will be a blessing." He said: And all this talk was unknown to Buhaym, and if he had known any of it, he would not have accompanied him. He said: So they departed together until they performed the ḥajj and returned, neither of them realizing that he had a brother other than his companion. When I came to greet my neighbor, he said to me: "May God reward you, my brother, on my behalf. I did not imagine that among people of such character there was anyone like Abū Bakr. By God, he was generous to me in expenses while he was destitute and I was wealthy, and he was generous to me in service while I was a strong young man and he was a weak old man. He would cook for me while I was not fasting and he was fasting." He said: I said to him: "How was your situation with him regarding what you disliked about his prolonged weeping?" He said: "By God, I became accustomed to that weeping, and my heart was gladdened, until I would join him in it, so that the people of the caravan were annoyed by us." He said: Then by God, they became accustomed to it, and when they heard us weeping, they wept. Some of them began to say to others: "What makes them more entitled to weeping than us, when the final destination is the same?" He said: And by God, they began to weep and we wept. He said: Then I left him and went to Buhaym, greeted him, and said: "How did you find your companion?" He said: "The best companion, much in remembrance of God, mighty and majestic, long in recitation of the Qurʾān, quick to shed tears, forbearing of the slips of a companion. May God reward you on my behalf." 1139 - Jārūd b. Yazīd, brother of al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Naysābūrī. He narrated from Bahz b. Ḥakīm and ʿUmar b. Dharr. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah narrated from him, and they considered him weak. He died in this year. 1140 - Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad, Abū Muḥammad al-Aʿwar, client of Sulaymān b. Majālid, client of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr. Of Tirmidhī origin. He heard from Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Shuʿbah, Ḥamzah al-Zayyāt, and al-Layth b. Saʿd. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā, and Ibn Abī Khaythamah narrated from him. He was precise and trustworthy, except that he changed at the end of his life, and he had moved to al-Maṣṣīṣah with his children and family, where he stayed for years, then he came to Baghdad and died there. 1141 - Dāwūd b. al-Muḥabbar b. Qaḥdham b. Sulaymān b. Dhakwān, Abū Sulaymān al-Ṭāʾī al-Baṣrī. He settled in Baghdad and narrated there from Shuʿbah, Ḥammād b. Salamah, Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī, Muqātil b. Sulaymān, Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh, and others. Al-Barjalānī and others narrated from him. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn praised him and said: "He is trustworthy, but he associated with a group of Muʿtazilah and they corrupted him." Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: "He is a likeness, nothing," and likewise al-Bukhārī said: "He is a likeness, nothing; he does not know what ḥadīth is." From Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣūrī, who said: I heard ʿAbd al-Ghanī b. Saʿīd al-Ḥāfiẓ say: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿUmar said to us: "The book 'al-ʿAql' (The Intellect) was fabricated by four men. The first of them was Maysarah b. ʿAbd Rabbihi, then Dāwūd b. al-Muḥabbar stole it from him and assembled it with chains of transmission other than those of Maysarah, then ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Rajāʾ stole it and assembled it with other chains, then Sulaymān b. ʿĪsā al-Sajazī stole it and assembled it with other chains." Or something similar to what al-Dāraquṭnī said. Dāwūd died in Baghdad in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. 1142 - Shabābah b. Sawwār, Abū ʿAmr al-Fazārī, their client. His origin was from Khurāsān. He settled in al-Madāʾin and narrated there and in Baghdad from Shuʿbah, Jarīr b. ʿUthmān, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, and al-Layth. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and Abū Khaythamah narrated from him. His father's name was Marwān, but Sawwār predominated over him. Shabābah was abundant in ḥadīth. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal criticized him. He was a Murjiʾī, but he retracted that. He died in Makkah in this year. 1143 - Abū Jaʿfar, Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Madāʾinī. He heard from Warqāʾ b. ʿUmar, Shuʿbah, and others. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and ʿAbbās al-Dūrī narrated from him among others. Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd said: "There is no harm in him." He died in this year. 1144 - Yazīd b. Hārūn b. Zādhī b. Thābit, Abū Khālid al-Sulamī. He was from the people of Wāsiṭ. He was born in the year 118 AH, and heard from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Sulaymān al-Taymī, ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, and many others. He was trustworthy, reliable, and a memorizer. He narrated in Baghdad, and his assembly was counted at ninety thousand. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: "I have not seen anyone with a better memory than Yazīd b. Hārūn b. Zādhī b. Thābit." From Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ṭayyib, who said: I heard Yazīd b. Hārūn, and it was said to him that Hārūn al-Mustamlī wanted to enter upon him—meaning in his ḥadīth—to test his memory. While he was thus, Hārūn entered, and Yazīd heard his voice, and said: "O Hārūn, I have heard that you want to enter upon me in my ḥadīth, so exert your utmost; may God not shepherd you if you spare me. I memorize twenty-three thousand ḥadīths without repetition; may God not establish me if I am not up to my ḥadīth." Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad b. Sinān said: "I have never seen a scholar with a more beautiful prayer than Yazīd b. Hārūn. He would stand as if he were a pillar. He used to pray between Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, and between Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, and he did not cease from prayer night and day. He and Hushaym together were known for their lengthy prayer night and day." From Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Ṣāʾigh, who said: A man said to Yazīd b. Hārūn: "How much is your portion of the night?" He said: "Do I sleep any part of the night? If so, may God not let my eye sleep." From Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Azhar, who said: I heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah say: "I saw Yazīd b. Hārūn in Wāsiṭ, and he had the most beautiful eyes of any person. Then I saw him with one eye, then I saw him after his eyes had gone. I said: 'O Abū Khālid, what happened to the two beautiful eyes?' He said: 'The weeping of the pre-dawn hours took them.'" From Ibn Aktham, who said: Al-Maʾmūn said to us: "Were it not for the position of Yazīd b. Hārūn, I would openly declare that the Qurʾān is created." One of his companions said: "O Commander of the Faithful, who is Yazīd that he should be feared?" He said: "Woe to you, I fear that he would refute me, and the people would differ, and there would be a trial, and I dislike trial." The man said to him: "I will test that for you from him." He said: "Yes." So the man went out to Wāsiṭ, came to Yazīd b. Hārūn, entered upon him in the mosque, sat with him, and said: "O Abū Khālid, the Commander of the Faithful greets you and says to you: 'I intend to openly declare that the Qurʾān is created.'" He said: "You lie about the Commander of the Faithful. The Commander of the Faithful would not compel the people to what they do not know. If you are truthful, return tomorrow to the assembly, and when the people gather, then say it." He said: When the next day came and the people gathered, he stood and said: "O Abū Khālid, the Commander of the Faithful greets you and says to you: 'I intend to openly declare that the Qurʾān is created.' What do you have regarding that?" He said: "You lie about the Commander of the Faithful in that. The Commander of the Faithful would not compel the people to what they do not know and what no one has told him." He said: So he returned and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you knew better." And the story was such and such. He said to him: "Woe to you, he is playing with you." Yazīd died in Wāsiṭ at the beginning of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. From Abū Nāfiʿ, the son of the daughter of Yazīd b. Hārūn, who said: I was with Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and with him were two men. One of them said: "O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, I saw Yazīd b. Hārūn in a dream and said to him: 'O Abū Khālid, what has God done with you?' He said: 'He forgave me, granted me intercession, and reproached me.' I said to him: 'He forgave you and granted you intercession; I knew that. For what did He reproach you?' He said: 'He said to me: "O Yazīd, do you narrate from Jarīr b. ʿUthmān?" I said: "O Lord, I knew nothing but good." He said: "O Yazīd, he used to hate Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib." He said: And the other man said: "By God, I also saw Yazīd b. Hārūn in a dream, and I said to him: 'Did Munkar and Nakīr come to you?' He said: 'Yes, by God, and they asked me: "Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?" I said: "Is such a thing said to one like me? I was the most knowledgeable of people about this in the world." They said to me: "You have spoken truthfully. Sleep the sleep of a bride; no harm upon you."' }
