✧ Mention of the succession of his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān When al-Ḥakam b. Hishām died, his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān took up the kingship after him. His kunyah was Abū al-Muṭarrif. His mother’s name was Ḥalāwah. He had been with his father. He was born in Ṭulayṭilah during the days when his father al-Ḥakam was governing it on behalf of his own father Hishām. He was born at seven months; that was found in his father’s handwriting. He was large-bodied, handsome, and fine of face. When he assumed authority, his father’s paternal uncle ʿAbd Allāh (al-Balansī) rose against him, seized with greed upon the death of al-Ḥakam, and marched out of Balansiyah making for Qurṭubah. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān prepared to meet him. When news of that reached ʿAbd Allāh, he became afraid and his resolve weakened, so he returned to Balansiyah. Then he died suddenly in the midst of that, and God protected that region from his evil. When he died, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān brought his children and his household to himself in Qurṭubah, and the emirate in al-Andalus became purely the possession of the son of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
