Translation
✧ Mention of the death of al-Ḥakam b. Hishām In this year al-Ḥakam b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ruler of al-Andalus, died, with four nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. His oath of allegiance had been given in Ṣafar of the year 180 AH. His age was fifty-two years, and his kunyah was Abū al-ʿĀṣ. He was born of an umm walad. He was tall, dark-complexioned, and slender. He had nineteen sons. He composed good poetry. He was the first to organize paid professional troops in al-Andalus, to gather weapons and equipment, to increase the number of servants and attendants, to tie horses at his gate, and to imitate tyrants in his conduct. He acquired mamlūks and included them among the paid troops; their number reached five thousand mamlūks. They were called al-khurs (“the mute”) because of the foreignness of their tongues. They stood one day at the gate of his palace. He personally oversaw affairs, both those near and those far. He had a group of trusted companions who kept him informed of the conditions of the people, so he redressed wrongs done to them and gave justice to the oppressed. He was brave, bold, and awe-inspiring. He was the one who consolidated the kingdom in al-Andalus for his descendants. He drew the jurists and the people of knowledge near to him.
