Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Hamdānī In this year, ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Hamdānī, his brother Aḥmad, and a group of his household were killed. He had seized control of al-Mawṣil. The reason for his killing was that he went out with a group of his people and some of the Azd. When he looked at the rural district of Nineveh and the meadow, he said: "What excellent lands for a single person!" One of the Azd said: "Then what do we do?" He said: "You will join Oman." The news spread. Then ʿAlī seized a man from the Azd called ʿAwn b. Jabalah and built a wall over him, and he died inside it. His story became known, so the Azd rode out, led by al-Sayyid b. Anas, and they fought. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn sought help from a Kharijite called Mahdī b. ʿUlwān, and he came to him, entered the town, prayed with the people, and called for allegiance to himself. The war intensified and ultimately went against ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn and his companions. They left the town for al-Ḥadīthah, and the Azd pursued them there and killed ʿAlī, his brother Aḥmad, and a group of their household. Their brother Muḥammad went to Baghdad and escaped. The Azd returned to al-Mawṣil, and al-Sayyid took control of it, delivering the Friday sermon in the name of al-Maʾmūn and obeying him. (Al-Hamdānī here is a relation to Hamdān, with sukūn on the mīm and unpointed dāl, and it is a tribe from Yemen).
