ذِكْرُ الظَّفَرِ بِسَهْلِ بْنِ سَلَامَةَ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ ظَفِرَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمَهْدِيِّ بِسَهْلِ بْنِ سَلَامَةَ الْمُطَوَّعِ، فَحَبَسَهُ وَعَاقَبَهُ. وَكَانَ سَبَبَ ظَفَرِهِ بِهِ أَنَّ سَهْلًا كَانَ مُقِيمًا بِبَغْدَاذَ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْأَمْرِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيِ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، فَاجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ عَامَّةُ أَهْلِ بَغْدَاذَ، فَلَمَّا انْهَزَمَ عِيسَى أَقْبَلَ هُوَ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ نَحْوَ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَلَامَةَ، لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَذْكُرُهُمْ بِأَقْبَحِ أَعْمَالِهِمْ، وَيُسَمِّيهِمُ الْفُسَّاقَ، فَقَاتَلُوهُ أَيَّامًا، حَتَّى صَارُوا إِلَى الدُّرُوبِ، وَأَعْطَوْا أَصْحَابَهُ الدَّرَاهِمَ الْكَثِيرَةَ، حَتَّى تَنَحَّوْا عَنِ الدُّرُوبِ، فَأَجَابُوا إِلَى ذَلِكَ. فَلَمَّا كَانَ السَّبْتُ لِخَمْسٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ، قَصَدُوهُ مِنْ كُلِّ وَجْهٍ، وَخَذَلَهُ أَهْلُ الدُّرُوبِ لِأَجْلِ الدَّرَاهِمُ الَّتِي أَخَذُوهَا، حَتَّى وَصَلَ عِيسَى وَأَصْحَابُهُ إِلَى مَنْزِلِ سَهْلٍ، فَاخْتَفَى مِنْهُ، وَاخْتَلَطَ بِالنَّظَّارَةِ، فَلَمْ يَرَوْهُ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ، فَجَعَلُوا عَلَيْهِ الْعُيُونَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ أَخَذُوهُ، وَأَتَوْا بِهِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنَ الْهَادِي، فَكَلَّمَهُ فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَتْ دَعْوَتِي عَبَّاسِيَّةً، وَإِنَّمَا كُنْتُ أَدْعُو إِلَى الْعَمَلِ بِالْكِتَابِ وَالسُّنَّةِ، وَأَنَا عَلَى مَا كُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَيْهِ السَّاعَةَ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: اخْرُجْ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَقُلْ لَهُمْ: إِنَّ مَا كُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَيْهِ بَاطِلٌ. فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ! قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ مَا كُنْتُ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَيْهِ ( مِنَ الْعَمَلِ بِالْكِتَابِ وَالسُّنَّةِ، وَأَنَا أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَيْهِ ) السَّاعَةَ. فَضَرَبُوهُ، وَقَيَّدُوهُ، وَشَتَمُوهُ، وَسَيَّرُوهُ إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْمَهْدِيِّ بِالْمَدَائِنِ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ كَلَّمَهُ بِمَا كَلَّمَ بِهِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنَ الْهَادِي، فَضَرَبَهُ، وَحَبَسَهُ، وَأَظْهَرَ أَنَّهُ قُتِلَ خَوْفًا مِنَ النَّاسِ، لِئَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا مَكَانَهُ فَيُخْرِجُوهُ، وَكَانَ مَا بَيْنَ خُرُوجِهِ وَقَبْضِهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا.
Translation
✧ Mention of the capture of Sahl b. Salāmah In this year, Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī captured Sahl b. Salāmah al-Muṭawwaʿ, and he imprisoned him and punished him. The cause of his capture of him was that Sahl was residing in Baghdādh calling to the enjoining of good and the forbidding of evil, and the common people of Baghdādh gathered around him. When ʿĪsā was defeated, he and those with him came towards Sahl b. Salāmah, because he used to remind them of their ugliest deeds and call them sinners. They fought him for days, until they came to the alleys, and they gave his companions many dirhams, until they withdrew from the alleys, and they agreed to that. When it was Saturday, with five days remaining of Shaʿbān, they came at him from every direction, and the people of the alleys forsook him because of the dirhams they had taken, until ʿĪsā and his companions reached the house of Sahl. He hid from them and mingled with the onlookers, and they did not see him in his house. They set spies upon him, and when night came, they seized him and brought him to Isḥāq b. al-Hādī. He spoke to him and said: “My call was only ʿAbbāsid, and I only called to acting according to the Book and the Sunnah, and I am upon what I was upon, calling you to it at this moment.” They said to him: “Go out to the people and say to them: What I was upon, calling you to it, is false.” He went out and said: “O people! You have known what I was calling you to of acting according to the Book and the Sunnah, and I call you to it at this moment.” They beat him, shackled him, and reviled him, and sent him to Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī at al-Madāʾin. When he entered upon him, he spoke to him with what he had spoken to Isḥāq b. al-Hādī, so he beat him and imprisoned him, and he made it appear that he had been killed out of fear of the people, so that they would not know his place and release him. Between his coming out and his capture was twelve months.
