✧ Mention of the strife in Ifrīqiyah with the people of Tripoli In this year, Abū ʿIṣām and those who agreed with him rose up against Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab, the amīr of Ifrīqiyah. Ibrāhīm fought them and prevailed over them. In this year, Ibn al-Aghlab appointed his son ʿAbd Allāh over Tripoli of the West. When he arrived there, the troops rose up against him and besieged him in his house. Then they made peace on the condition that he would leave them. So he left them, but he had not gone far from the town when many people gathered to him, and he distributed stipends. The Berbers came to him from every direction. He used to give each horseman four dirhams every day and give each foot soldier two dirhams a day. A great number gathered to him, and he marched with them to Tripoli. The troops went out against him, and they fought. The troops of Tripoli were defeated, and ʿAbd Allāh entered the city, granted security to the people, and remained there. Then his father dismissed him and appointed after him Sufyān b. al-Maḍāʾ. The Hawwārah rose up in Tripoli, so the troops went out against them, and they met and fought. The troops were routed to the city, and the Hawwārah pursued them. The troops fled to the amīr Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab, and the Hawwārah entered the city and demolished its walls. This reached Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab, so he sent his son Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh with thirteen thousand horsemen. He fought the Berbers, many of them were killed, and he entered Tripoli and rebuilt its wall. The news of the defeat of the Berbers reached ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Rustam. He gathered the Berbers and incited them, and came with them to Tripoli. They were a great host, angry on behalf of the Berbers and in support of them. They encamped at Tripoli and besieged it. Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm blocked the Zanātah gate and fought from the Hawwārah gate. He remained thus until his father Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab died, having designated the emirate for his son ʿAbd Allāh. His brother Ziyādat Allāh b. Ibrāhīm took the pledges from the troops on his behalf and sent a letter to his brother ʿAbd Allāh, informing him of their father's death and that the emirate was his. The Berbers seized the messenger and the letter and delivered them to ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Rustam, who ordered that ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm be proclaimed with the news of his father's death. [Then he made peace with them on the condition that the city] and the sea belong to ʿAbd Allāh, and whatever was outside of that belong to ʿAbd al-Wahhāb. ʿAbd Allāh traveled to al-Qayrawān. The people met him, and he took charge of affairs. His days were days of calm and tranquility.
