✧ Mention of the killing of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jabala In this year, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jabala al-Anbārī was killed. The reason for his killing was that when he came out under the safe-conduct of Ṭāhir, he displayed to Ṭāhir and his companions that he was at peace with them, content with their safe-conduct. Then he took them unawares while they were secure, rode out with his companions, and fell upon Ṭāhir and his companions while they were unaware. Ṭāhir’s infantry stood firm against him and fought him until the horsemen were ready; they fought the fiercest fighting that men had seen, until the swords broke and the spears shattered. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was put to flight, but he remained with a small band of his companions and fought on. His companions said to him, “Escape is possible for you, so flee.” He said, “The Commander of the Faithful shall never see my face in flight.” He continued fighting until he was killed. Those of his companions who fled reached ʿAbd Allāh and Aḥmad, the two sons of al-Ḥarashī, who were with a great army at Qaṣr al-Luṣūṣ, which al-Amīn had sent as reinforcement for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. When the fugitives reached them, they too fled with their troops without fighting, until they entered Baghdādh. The country became open to Ṭāhir, and he proceeded to take it town by town and district by district, until he reached Shalāshān, one of the villages of Ḥulwān. There he dug a trench, fortified his camp, and gathered his companions.
