✧ Mention of the dispatch of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jabalah When the killing of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā and the rout of his army reached al-Amīn, he dispatched ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jabalah al-Anbārī with twenty thousand men toward Hamadhān, appointed him over it and over all the land of Khurāsān that he might conquer, commanded him to exert himself, and reinforced him with funds. He marched until he encamped at Hamadhān, fortified it, and repaired its wall. Ṭāhir came to him at Hamadhān, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān went out against him in battle order. They fought a fierce battle, both sides held firm, and killing and wounding among them became great. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was defeated and entered Hamadhān. He stayed there for some days until his companions regained strength and their wounds healed. Then he went out against Ṭāhir. When he saw them, he said to his companions: “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān wants to show himself to you. If you draw near to him, he will fight you. If you defeat him and he enters the city, he will fight you at its trench, and if he defeats you, the field will be open for him. But halt near our camp and our trench; if he draws near to us, we will fight him.” So they halted. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān thought that awe had prevented them, so he advanced toward them. They fought a fierce battle, both sides held firm, and killing among ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's companions became great. He began to go around among them, inciting them and commanding them to be steadfast. Then a man from Ṭāhir's companions charged at the bearer of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's banner and killed him, and Ṭāhir's companions pressed upon them. They were routed, and Ṭāhir's companions put the swords among them, killing them until they reached the city. Ṭāhir remained at its gate besieging it. The siege pressed hard upon them, and the people of the city grew weary. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān feared that the people of the city would rise against him, along with the hardship his companions were suffering. So he sent to Ṭāhir seeking safe conduct for himself and those with him. He granted him safe conduct, and he departed from Hamadhān.
