Translation

✧ In the year one hundred and ninety: al-Rashīd raided the summer expedition—that is, the land of the Byzantines—in Rajab, and he appointed al-Maʾmūn as his deputy at al-Raqqah, entrusting the affairs to him, and he wrote to the horizons [the provinces] [enjoining] obedience and allegiance. He handed him the seal of al-Manṣūr to seek blessing through it; it was the seal of the elite, and its inscription was: “God is my trust; I have believed in Him.” In it [this year]: the Byzantines came out to ʿAyn Zarbah and the Church of the Black One, raiding and taking captives, and the people of al-Maṣṣīṣah recovered what they had taken. In it [this year]: the people of Cyprus violated the treaty, so Maʿyūf raided them and took its people captive. In it [this year]: ʿĪsā b. Mūsā al-Hādī led the people in the Pilgrimage. In this year a Khārijite emerged from the region of ʿAbd al-Qays, called Sayf b. Bukayr. Al-Rashīd sent against him Muḥammad b. Yazīd b. Mazyad, and he killed him at ʿAyn al-Nawrah. In it [this year] al-Faḍl b. Sahl embraced Islam at the hand of al-Maʾmūn; and it is said, rather, that his father Sahl embraced Islam at the hand of al-Mahdī, while he was imprisoned; and it is said that al-Faḍl and his brother al-Ḥasan embraced Islam at the hand of Yaḥyā b. Khālid, and Yaḥyā chose him to serve al-Maʾmūn. For this reason al-Faḍl was mindful of the Barāmikah and praised them. He was given the title Dhū al-Riʾāsatayn because he assumed both the vizierate and the sword [military command]. He was inclined to Shīʿism, and he it was who advised al-Maʾmūn to designate ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā ﷺ. Over al-Mawṣil this year was Khālid b. Yazīd b. Ḥātim b. Qabīṣah b. al-Muhallab. When he entered al-Mawṣil, his banner broke at the City Gate, and he regarded it as an evil omen. With him was the poet Abū al-Shīṣ, who said about that: It was not that the banner was broken for an omen to be feared, nor for a matter that would lead to ruin; but this lance had its corner weakened by the smallness of the governorship, so al-Mawṣil scorned it. And Khālid was relieved.
