فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُوهُ: يَا بُنَيَّ، دَعْوَةُ مَظْلُومٍ سَرَتْ بِلَيْلٍ غَفَلْنَا عَنْهَا وَلَمْ يَغْفَلِ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، ثُمَّ ✧ Those of the notables who died in this year Asad b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir, Abū al-Mundhir al-Bajalī al-Kūfī Asad b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir, Abū al-Mundhir al-Bajalī al-Kūfī, the companion of Abū Ḥanīfah. He studied jurisprudence and heard from Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāʾah. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and others narrated from him. He had held the judgeship in Baghdad and in Wāsiṭ, but he perceived something wrong with his eyesight, so he returned the records and withdrew from the judgeship. Yaḥyā declared him trustworthy, and Aḥmad said: He was truthful. ʿAlī and al-Bukhārī declared him weak. He died in this year. Ḥakkām b. Salm al-Kinānī al-Rāzī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥakkām b. Salm al-Kinānī al-Rāzī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He heard from Ismāʿīl b. Khālid, al-Zubayr b. ʿAdī, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, and al-Thawrī. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and Abū Maʿmar al-Hudhalī narrated from him. He was trustworthy. And on the authority of Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said: I saw three hundred of the people of Badr, and there was not one among them who did not wish that his companion would suffice him in giving legal opinions. Ḥakkām died in Makkah in this year before he performed the pilgrimage. Saʿdūn al-Majnūn Saʿdūn al-Majnūn. On the authority of ʿUthmān b. Muḥammad al-ʿUthmānī, who said: It was read to Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā while I was present. He said: I heard Yūsuf say: Al-Fatḥ b. Shakhraf said: Saʿdūn was a man of love for God. He fasted for sixty years until his mind became light, and the people called him mad because of his repeated speech about love. He disappeared from us for a time. While I was standing in the circle of Dhū al-Nūn, I saw on him a woolen cloak, and on it was written: "It is not to be sold and not to be bought." He heard the speech of Dhū al-Nūn, cried out, and began to say: There is no good in complaining to one who is not the object of the complaint, and there must be complaint when there is no patience. And on the authority of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Qurrah, who said: Al-Aṣmaʿī said: I passed by Saʿdūn, and there he was sitting at the head of a drunken old man, defending him. I said: Saʿdūn, why do I see you sitting at the head of this old man? He said: He is mad. I said to him: Are you the mad one or is he? He said: No, rather he is. I said: From what do you say that? He said: Because I prayed the noon and afternoon prayers in congregation, while he did not pray in congregation or alone. I said: Did you say anything about that? He said: I left date wine to the people of date wine, and I began to drink pure water, because date wine humiliates the mighty and clothes the bright faces with blackness. If that was permissible for youth, what is the excuse for it when gray hair appears? I said to him: You have spoken truth. And I departed. 1038 - ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Ḥumayd was trustworthy and righteous, sound in hadith, a master of grammar and Arabic, and recitation of the Qurʾān. He was from the people of al-Kūfah, then he came to Baghdad in the days of Hārūn al-Rashīd, and he placed him with his son Muḥammad, and he remained with him until he died. ʿAṭāʾ b. Muslim, Abū Makhlad al-Khaffāf al-Ḥalabī ʿAṭāʾ b. Muslim, Abū Makhlad al-Khaffāf al-Ḥalabī. He came to Baghdad and narrated from al-Aʿmash. Yaḥyā and Abū Dāwūd said: He was trustworthy. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Abī Sukaynah, who said: I entered upon ʿAṭāʾ b. Muslim to visit him during his illness, and I had hardly stood up when he said: May God reward you well as a visitor, but ʿĪsā b. Ṣāliḥ, may God not reward him well. He visited me and did not leave until I urinated in my clothes. ʿAṭāʾ died in Ramaḍān of this year. Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak, Abū ʿAlī Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak, Abū ʿAlī. Al-Mahdī had entrusted Hārūn al-Rashīd to him and placed him in his care. When Hārūn became caliph, he acknowledged Yaḥyā's right and honored him. When he mentioned him, he would say: My father said. He made the issuing and receiving of affairs his responsibility, until he brought down the Barmakids, became angry with him, and imprisoned him for life until he died in prison. He had excellent speech and vast generosity. Among his sayings: A man's gatekeeper is his agent over his honor. He said: Whoever reaches a rank and becomes arrogant because of it shows that his true place is below it. He said: The blackness of a man's servants indicates his generosity. He said to his son: Take from everyone a part, for whoever is ignorant of something will oppose it. And on the authority of Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Nadīm, who said: Yaḥyā b. Khālid said: Three things indicate the intellects of their possessors: the gift, the letter, and the messenger. He used to say to his children: Write down the best of what you hear, memorize the best of what you write, and speak of the best of what you memorize. Ibn ʿImrān said: With his chain of transmission, he said: Yaḥyā b. Khālid used to say: When the world comes to you, spend, for it does not perish; and when it turns away, spend, for it does not remain. And on the authority of al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, who said: I heard Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm say: Yaḥyā b. Khālid's gifts, when he rode out, to anyone who presented himself before him were two hundred dirhams. One day he rode out, and a man of letters, a poet, presented himself and said: O namesake of the chaste one, Yaḥyā, two gardens of your Lord's bounty have been prepared for you. Everyone who passes by you on the road has two hundred of your gifts. Two hundred dirhams for one like me is little; it is from you for the one who seeks fire quickly. Yaḥyā said: You have spoken truth. He ordered him taken to his house. When he returned from the caliph's palace, he asked him about his situation. He mentioned that he had married and was faced with one of three options: either pay the dowry, which was four thousand dirhams; or divorce; or provide for the woman until he could arrange to bring her. Yaḥyā ordered for him four thousand for the dowry, four thousand for the price of a house, four thousand for what the house needed, four thousand for building, and four thousand as reserve. He took twenty thousand dirhams. And on the authority of Ḥusayn b. Fahm, who said: Ibn al-Mawṣilī said: My father narrated to me, saying: I came to Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak and complained to him of straitened circumstances. He said: Woe to you! What can I do for you? We have nothing at this time, but here is a matter I will guide you to. Be a man in it. The deputy of the ruler of Egypt has come to me asking me to request something as a gift from his master, and I refused that. He insisted, and it has reached me that you gave for your slave girl so-and-so thousands of dinars. Now I will request her from him as a gift and tell him that she pleased me. Beware of selling her for less than thirty thousand dinars, and see how it goes. He said: By God, before I knew it, the man came to me and bargained with me for the slave girl. I said: I will not reduce her below thirty thousand dinars. He kept bargaining until he offered me twenty thousand dinars. When I heard that, my heart weakened and I could not refuse, so I sold her and took the twenty thousand. I went to Yaḥyā b. Khālid, and he said to me: How did you do in selling your slave girl? I informed him and said: By God, I could not control myself from accepting the twenty thousand when I heard it. He said: You are base. This is the deputy of the ruler of Fārs. He has come to me about something similar. Take your slave girl, and when he bargains with you for her, do not reduce her below fifty thousand dinars, for he will surely buy her from you for that. He said: The man came to me and I asked fifty thousand dinars for her. He kept bargaining until he gave me thirty thousand dinars. My heart weakened and I could not refuse, and I did not believe it, so I bound her to him for it. Then I went to Yaḥyā b. Khālid, and he said to me: For how much did you sell the slave girl? I informed him. He said: Woe to you! Did not the first lesson discipline you against the second? I said: By God, my heart weakened from refusing something I had not hoped for. He said: This is your slave girl; take her back. He said: A slave girl for whom I paid fifty thousand dinars as ransom, then I own her. I call you as witness that she is free and that I have married her. And Abū Bakr b. Thābit al-Khaṭīb said: It reached us that al-Rashīd sent Ṣāliḥ, the keeper of the prayer place, to Manṣūr b. Ziyād, saying to him: You owe ten thousand dirhams. Bring them to me today. If he does so before sunset, fine; otherwise take his head and bring it to me, and do not refer back to me. Ṣāliḥ said: I went out to Manṣūr and informed him. He said: By God, my soul is lost. By God, I cannot manage three hundred thousand dirhams, let alone ten thousand. Ṣāliḥ said to him: Consider what is more beneficial for you than this talk. He said to him: Take me to my family so that I may make my will. When he entered upon them, the clamor of the women and slave girls rose. He said to Ṣāliḥ: Take us to Yaḥyā b. Khālid; perhaps God will bring relief through his hand. He went with him, and he entered upon Yaḥyā weeping. He said: What is the matter with you? He told him the story. He bowed his head in thought, then called a slave girl and said: How much money do you have? She said: Five thousand thousand dirhams. He said: Bring it. Then he sent to al-Faḍl and said to him: My son, you had told me that you wanted to buy an estate for two thousand thousand dirhams. I have found for you an estate that yields sugar and lasts forever; send it to me. He sent it. He sent to Jaʿfar and said: My son, send me one thousand thousand dirhams for a debt I owe. He sent it. He thought for a moment, then said to a servant at his head: Send to me Danānīr and tell her to bring the necklace that the Commander of the Faithful gave her, so that I may give it as a gift. He said: This is the necklace of the Commander of the Faithful, worth one hundred and twenty thousand dinars. He had given it to Danānīr, and we have valued it for you at two thousand thousand dirhams to complete the amount. Release our friend. I took that and brought Manṣūr back with me. When we reached the door, Manṣūr recited: You did not leave me with anything, but you feared the cold of arrows. Ṣāliḥ said: I said to myself: There is no one more generous than Yaḥyā, and no one more vile in nature than this Nabatean, since he did not thank the one who saved his life. I went to al-Rashīd and informed him of what happened, except for the recitation of the verse, fearing that he would kill him. Al-Rashīd said: I knew that he would not be saved except by the people of this house. Take the money and return the necklace, for I would not give a gift and then take it back. Ṣāliḥ said: My anger at Manṣūr made me inform Yaḥyā of what he recited. Yaḥyā began to excuse him for the treachery and said: A fearful man's mind cannot be relied upon, and he may say what he does not believe. I said: By God, I do not know which of your two actions amazes me more, your action with him or your excuse for him. But I know that time will never bring the like of you. Yaḥyā b. Khālid used to give Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah one thousand dirhams every month. Sufyān was heard saying in his prostration: O God, Yaḥyā has taken care of my worldly affairs, so take care of his affairs in the hereafter. When Yaḥyā died, one of his brothers saw him in a dream and said to him: What did God do with you? He said: He forgave me because of Sufyān's supplication. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak, who said: My father said to his father, Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak, while he was in fetters, wearing wool, and imprisoned: O father, after command and prohibition and immense wealth, time has brought us to fetters, wearing wool, and imprisonment? His father said to him: My son, the supplication of an oppressed person that traveled by night while we were heedless of it, and God was not heedless of it. Then he began to recite: Many a people went forth in blessing for a time, while time was full and abundant. Time was silent about them for a while, then made them weep blood when it spoke. Yaḥyā died in al-Rashīd's prison at al-Rāfiqah on the third of Muḥarram in this year, at the age of seventy. His son al-Faḍl prayed over him, and he was buried on the bank of the Euphrates in the suburb of Harthamah. When he died, a slip of paper was found in his pocket, written in his own hand: "The opponent has preceded the defendant with traces, and the judge is the just arbiter who does not oppress and needs no evidence." The slip was taken to al-Rashīd, and he wept all that day, and for days grief was visible on his face. And ʿUmar b. ʿAlī b. ʿAṭāʾ b. Muqaddam al-Muqaddamī al-Baṣrī.
