The year 188 AH

Translation

✧ In the year one hundred and eighty-eight AH, al-Rashīd performed the Ḥajj with the people, and he distributed abundant wealth. This was the last Ḥajj he performed, according to the statement of some of them. Buhlūl met him on the way and admonished him. It is related from al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ that he said: I performed the Ḥajj with Hārūn al-Rashīd, and we passed by al-Kūfah, where Buhlūl the fool was babbling. I said: Be quiet, for the Commander of the Faithful has approached. So he fell silent. When the howdah drew level with him, he said: O Commander of the Faithful, Isḥāq b. Bābil related to us, saying: Qudāmah b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿĀmirī related to us, saying: I saw the Prophet ﷺ at Minā on a camel, beneath him a worn saddle, and there was no driving away, no striking, and no “to you, to you!” I said: O Commander of the Faithful, it is Buhlūl the fool. He said: I have recognized him. Speak, O Buhlūl. So he said: O Commander of the Faithful: Suppose you have possessed the earth entirely, and the servants have submitted to you—then what? Will not your destination tomorrow be the hollow of a grave, while this one and then that one shovel dust upon you? He said: You have spoken well, O Buhlūl. Is there anything else? He said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. Whoever God grants beauty and wealth, and he remains chaste in his beauty and shares generously from his wealth, he is recorded in the register of the righteous. He said: Then he thought that he wanted something. He said: We have commanded that your debt be paid. He said: Do not do it, O Commander of the Faithful. Do not repay a debt with a debt. Return the right to its owner, and pay the debt of your own self from your own self. He said: We have commanded that an allowance be granted to you. He said: Do not do it, O Commander of the Faithful. He does not give you something and then forget me. The One who granted you an allowance has granted me an allowance. I have no need of your stipend. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī related with his chain of transmission: When al-Rashīd entered upon al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ, and al-Fuḍayl did not recognize him, then he recognized him and said to him: It is you, O handsome of face. Increase your visits to this House, for no caliph after you will perform the Ḥajj. Al-Ṣūlī said with his chain of transmission from Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh that he said, when al-Rashīd passed by him at al-Kūfah returning from the Ḥajj in the year one hundred and eighty-eight AH: Al-Rashīd will not perform the Ḥajj after this Ḥajj, and no caliph after him will ever perform the Ḥajj.
