وفي سَنَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَثَمَانِينَ وَمِائَةٍ غَزَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ جِبْرَائِيلَ الصَّائِفَةَ ، فَدَخَلَ أَرْضَ الرُّومِ مِنْ دَرْبِ الصَّفْصَافِ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ نِقْفُورُ مَلِكُ الرُّومِ، فَأَتَاهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ أَمْرٌ صَرَفَهُ عَنْهُ، وَلَقِيَ جَمْعًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَجُرِحَ ثَلَاثَ جِرَاحَاتٍ، وَقُتِلَ مِنَ الرُّومِ - فِيمَا قِيلَ - أَرْبَعُونَ أَلْفًا وَسَبْعُمِائَةٍ. وقَالَ أَبُو الشِّيصِ يَمْدَحُ الرَّشِيدَ عِنْدَ وُرُودِ الْخَبَرِ بِهَزِيمَةِ نَقْفُورَ وَفَتْحِ بَلَدِ الرُّومِ مِنْ قَصِيدَةٍ: شَدَدْتَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قُوَى الْمُلْكِ صَدَعْتَ بِفَتْحِ الرُّومِ أَفْئِدَةَ التُّرْكِ قَرَنْتَ بِسَيْفِ اللَّهِ هَامَ عَدُوِّهِ وَطَأْطَأْتَ بِالْإِسْلَامِ نَاصِيَةَ الشِّرْكِ فَأَصْبَحْتَ مَسْرُورًا وَلَا تَعْيَ ضَاحِكًا وَأَصْبَحَ نَقْفُورُ عَلَى مُلْكِهِ يَبْكِي .
Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and eighty-eight AH, Ibrāhīm b. Jibrāʾīl led the summer expedition. He entered the land of the Byzantines through the pass of al-Ṣafṣāf. Then Nicephorus, the king of the Byzantines, came out against him, but a matter came upon him from behind that diverted him from him. He met a gathering of the Muslims, and he was wounded with three wounds, and there were killed of the Byzantines—as it is said—forty thousand seven hundred. Abū al-Shīṣ said, praising al-Rashīd when the news of the defeat of Nicephorus and the conquest of the land of the Byzantines arrived, from an ode: You strengthened, O Commander of the Faithful, the powers of kingship; you split with the conquest of the Byzantines the hearts of the Turks. You joined with the sword of God the crowns of His enemy's heads, And you lowered with Islam the forelock of polytheism. So you became glad, and you did not tire of laughing, While Nicephorus became weeping over his kingdom. .
