تُوُفِّيَ ✧ Those of the notables who died in this year Aḥmad, son of the Commander of the Faithful Hārūn al-Rashīd Aḥmad, son of the Commander of the Faithful al-Rashīd He was an ascetic, devoted worshipper; he had become devout. He used to eat nothing except from the work of his own hands, working in clay, and he possessed nothing but a shovel (mirr) and a basket (zinbīl)—that is, a mattock and a pannier. His wage for each day he worked, from one Friday to the next, was a dirham and a dāniq, and he worked only on Saturday, then devoted himself to worship the rest of the days until Friday. Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Thaqafī said: I heard ʿAlī b. al-Muwaffaq say: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Futūḥ say: One day I went out looking for a man to repair something for me in the house. I went and was directed to a man of handsome face, before whom lay a provision sack (mizwad) and a basket. I said: 'Will you work for me?' He said: 'Yes, for a dirham and a dāniq.' I said: 'Get up.' He got up and did the work for me for a dirham and a dāniq [and a dirham and a dāniq, and a dirham and a dāniq]. Then I came another day and asked about him, and was told: 'That is a man who is seen only one day a week, on such-and-such a day.' He said: So I came on that day and said: 'Will you work for me?' He said: 'Yes, for a dirham and a dāniq.' I said: 'For a dirham.' He said: 'For a dirham and a dāniq.' I did not have the dāniq, but I wanted to test what he had. When evening came I weighed out a dirham for him. He said to me: 'What is this?' I said: 'A dirham.' He said: 'Did I not say to you: a dirham and a dāniq?! You have spoiled it for me.' I said: 'And did I not say to you: for a dirham?' He said: 'I will not take anything from it.' He said: So I weighed out a dirham and a dāniq for him and said: 'Take it.' He refused [to take it] and said: 'Glory be to God! I say to you I will not take it, and you keep insisting?!' He refused to take it and left. He said: Then my family turned on me and said: 'May God do to you what you intended! You had a man who worked for you for a dirham, and you spoiled it for him.' He said: One day I came asking about him and was told: 'He is ill.' I found out where his house was and went to him. I asked permission to enter, and entered while he was suffering from a stomach ailment. There was nothing in his house except that provision sack and the basket. I greeted him and said: 'I have a need of you. You know the merit of bringing joy to a believer; I would like you to come to my house so that I may nurse you.' He said: 'Would you like that?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'On three conditions.' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'That you do not offer me food until I ask you; and when I die, that you bury me in this cloak of mine and this jubba.' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The third is harder than the two of them, and it is severe.' I said: 'Even if it is.' So I carried him to my house at noon. The next day he called me: 'O ʿAbd Allāh!' [I said: 'What is the matter with you?' He said:] 'I am dying. Open the purse on the sleeve of my jubba.' He said: I opened it and found in it a ring with a red stone. He said: 'When I die and you have buried me, take this ring and deliver it to Hārūn [al-Rashīd], the Commander of the Faithful, and say to him: the owner of this ring says to you: Woe to you! Do not die in this drunkenness of yours, for if you die in this drunkenness you will regret it.' He said: When I had buried him, I asked about the day of Hārūn al-Rashīd's procession, the Commander of the Faithful, wrote a petition, and presented myself to him, and was severely harmed. When he entered his palace and read the petition, he said: 'Bring me the owner of this petition.' He said: I was brought in while he was angry, saying: 'They keep accosting us and doing such things.' When I saw his anger, I took out the ring. When he looked at the ring, he said: 'Where did you get this [ring] from?' I said: 'A plasterer gave it to me.' He said to me: 'A plasterer? A plasterer?' and drew me near to him. I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, he gave me a testament.' He said to me: 'Woe to you! Speak.' I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, he instructed me, when I delivered this ring to you, to say to you: the owner of this ring sends you greetings of peace and says to you: Woe to you! Do not die in this drunkenness of yours, for if you die in it you will regret it.' He stood up on his feet, threw himself on the carpet, and began rolling on it, saying: 'O my son, you have counseled your father.' I said to myself: 'It is as if he is his son.' Then he sat down, they brought water, wiped his face, and he said: 'How did you know him?' He said: I told him his story. He said: He wept and said: 'This was my firstborn. My father al-Mahdī had mentioned Zubaydah to me, that he would marry me to her. But I caught sight of this woman and she fell into my heart, and she was of lowly origin, so I married her secretly from my father. She bore me this child, and I sent her down to al-Baṣrah, [and gave her] this ring and some other things, and said to her: keep yourself hidden; when you hear that I have assumed the caliphate, come to me. When I assumed the caliphate, I asked about them and was told [that they] had died, and I did not know that he was still alive. Where did you bury him?' I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, I buried him in the cemetery of ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik.' He said: 'I have a need of you. After sunset, stand at the gate for me so that I may come down to you [and go out] in disguise to his grave.' So I stood for him, and he went out in disguise with servants around him until he placed his hands in mine, and he shouted at the servants, so they withdrew. I brought him to his grave, and he spent the whole night weeping until morning, his hands, head, and beard on the grave, saying: 'O my son, you have counseled your father.' He said: I wept at his weeping, out of compassion for him. Then he heard voices and said: 'It is as if I hear people talking.' I said: 'Yes, O Commander of the Faithful, morning has come; dawn has broken.' He said to me: 'I have ordered ten thousand dirhams for you, and enroll your dependents with my dependents, for you have a right over me for burying my son. And if I die, I will bequeath that whoever comes after me shall provide for you as long as your descendants remain.' Then he took my hand until we were near the palace, [his hand in mine; when he reached the palace] he said: 'See what I enjoin upon you: when the sun rises, stand for me so that I may look at you, and I will call for you and you will tell me his story.' I said: 'God willing.' But I did not return to him. [The compiler said:] The story of al-Sabtī has also been narrated by another route, and in it are things that differ from this one. This route that we have cited is sounder, and its chain consists of trustworthy narrators. The storytellers have added to the story of al-Sabtī, going back and forth and mentioning that he was from Zubaydah, and that he went out hunting and Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī admonished him, and he fell from his horse, and other things, all of which are impossible. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab b. Thābit b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab b. Thābit b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, Abū Bakr al-Asadī. He narrated from Abū Ḥāzim, Hishām b. ʿUrwah, Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, and others. When al-Mahdī came to al-Madīnah, he attached himself to him and became one of his special companions. Al-Mahdī used to say: 'By God, there was no one among his ancestors except he was more perfect than him, and there is no one among people equal to him in his perfection.' Abū ʿUbayd Allāh sent him two thousand dinars, but he returned them and wrote to him: 'I do not accept a gift except from a caliph or an heir apparent.' When al-Mahdī gave the oath of allegiance to Mūsā, ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab said to him: Fasten with Hārūn the bonds of the covenant, and appoint him after the heir apparent. So he gave allegiance to him after Mūsā. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab said to him: They did not fall short of it, nor did they reach them, until your hands extend to me at their fullest length. When al-Rashīd became caliph, he offered ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab governorship, [but he refused]; so he compelled him. His conduct was excellent. From al-Zubayr, who said: My uncle Muṣʿab told me: My father disliked office. Al-Rashīd offered him the governorship of al-Madīnah, but he refused, and he insisted. He remained thus for three nights, with al-Rashīd insisting and he refusing. On the third night, he said to him: 'Come to me in the morning, God willing.' So he came to him in the morning. The Commander of the Faithful called for a spear and a turban, and tied the banner with his own hand, then said: 'Will you obey?' He said: 'Yes, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said: 'Then take this banner.' He took it. He said to him: 'Since you have afflicted me, O Commander of the Faithful, after well-being, I must stipulate conditions for myself.' He said to him: 'Stipulate.' He stipulated certain things, among them: 'The wealth of the alms is wealth that God Himself apportioned, and He did not entrust it to any of His creatures. I do not deem it lawful to receive provision from it. I must provide for the stipendiaries, so send with me my provision and the provision of the stipendiaries from the land-tax revenue.' He said: 'I have granted you that.' He said: 'And I will carry out from your letters what I deem right, and refrain from what I do not deem right.' He said: 'That is yours.' He said: So he governed al-Madīnah. He used to order that the alms wealth go to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muḥammad al-Darāwardī and another with him, Yaḥyā b. Abī Ghassān, and they would distribute it. Then al-Rashīd appointed him over al-Yaman, and added to it the governorship of ʿAkk. ʿAkk had previously belonged to the governor of Makkah. He gave him a salary of two thousand dinars each month. Yaḥyā b. Khālid said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, the salary of the governor of al-Yaman used to be one thousand dinars, and you have made ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab's salary two thousand dinars. I fear that no one you appoint over al-Yaman will be satisfied with less than what you gave ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab. If you made his salary one thousand dinars as it was, and gave him the other thousand as a gift (jāʾizah), no one would have an argument against you regarding the gift.' So he made his salary one thousand dinars, and gave him a gift of twenty thousand dinars, and appointed al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān as his deputy over al-Yaman. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: Then his son Bakkār b. ʿAbd Allāh governed al-Madīnah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab traveled to Baghdād, then went to al-Raqqah in the company of al-Rashīd, and died there in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, at the age of seventy. Al-Rashīd grieved deeply for him and sent his son al-Maʾmūn, who prayed over him. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Nāfiʿ, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab said to me: I saw in a dream, as a sleeper sees, a man saying: 'A son will be born to you from your umm walad, and you will not see him.' Nothing was more distressing to him than [the pregnancy of] his umm walad, Umm ʿAbd Allāh. She gave birth to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṣʿab on the day ʿAbd Allāh died, and he did not see him. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-ʿUmarī ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-ʿUmarī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He met Abū Ṭuwālah, and narrated from his father and from Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd. He was a devoted worshipper, diligent in worship, and he admonished al-Rashīd forcefully. From Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Baghawī, who said: I heard Saʿīd b. Sulaymān say: I was in Makkah in the portico of al-Shaṭawī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz [al-ʿUmarī] was beside me. Hārūn al-Rashīd had made the pilgrimage. A man said to me: 'O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, there is the Commander of the Faithful performing the saʿy; the course has been cleared for him.' Al-ʿUmarī said to the man: 'May God not reward you well on my behalf. You have burdened me with something I could have done without.' Then he put on his sandals and stood up. I followed him. Hārūn [al-Rashīd] came from al-Marwah heading to al-Ṣafā. He shouted at him: 'O Hārūn!' He said: When he saw him, he said: 'At your service, O uncle.' He said: 'Climb al-Ṣafā.' When he climbed it, he said: 'Cast your gaze [toward the House].' He said: 'I have done so.' He said: 'How many are they?' He said: 'Who can count them?' He said: 'How many among people are like them?' He said: 'Creatures whom none can count but God.' He said: 'Know, O man, that each one of them will be asked about his own need, but you alone will be asked about all of them. Consider how you will be.' He said: Hārūn wept, sat down, and they kept handing him handkerchief after handkerchief for his tears. Al-ʿUmarī said: 'And another thing I will say [to you].' He said: 'Speak, O uncle.' He said: 'By God, if a man acts extravagantly with his own wealth, he deserves to be placed under interdiction; then how about one who acts extravagantly with the wealth of the Muslims?' Then he left, and Hārūn was weeping. Muḥammad b. It has also been narrated to us by another route that he met him at the saʿy, and he seized the bridle of his mount. The soldiers lunged at him, but al-Rashīd restrained them from him, and spoke with him until al-Rashīd's tears flowed onto the cheekstrap of his mount, then he departed. And he met him once and said: 'O Hārūn, you have done such and such.' He listened to him and said: 'It is accepted from you, O uncle, upon my head and eyes.' Then he said to him: 'O Commander of the Faithful, the condition of the people is such and such.' He said: 'Not with my knowledge or command.' Al-ʿUmarī went out to al-Rashīd once to admonish him. When he reached al-Kūfah, the army marched as if a hundred thousand of the enemy had descended upon them, and did not add to their formation. Then he returned without reaching him.
