Khālid said to Ibn al-Sammāk: "When you enter upon the Commander of the Faithful, be brief and do not be long-winded with him." He said: When he entered upon him and stood before him, he said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you have a standing before God, and from that standing you will depart. Look to where you will depart, to Paradise or to the Fire." He said: Hārūn wept until he was on the point of death. Ibn al-Sammāk died in al-Kūfah in this year. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Hāshimī. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Hāshimī. He was born in al-Madīnah in the year twenty-eight; it is also said in the year twenty-nine. He had forty children, male and female. He was given to much worship and was generous. If he learned that a man was harming him, he would send him a thousand dinars. He went out to make peace. A certain slave presented him with a dish of ʿaṣīdah, so he purchased for a thousand dinars the estate in which that slave lived, together with the slave, then freed him and gave it to him. Al-Mahdī brought him to Baghdad, then returned him to al-Madīnah because of a dream he had seen. From al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ, from his father: When al-Mahdī imprisoned Mūsā b. Jaʿfar, al-Mahdī saw in a dream ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ saying: "O Muḥammad, would you then, if you were given authority, do corruption in the earth and sever your ties of kinship?" Al-Rabīʿ said: He sent for me at night, and that alarmed me. I came to him and found him reciting this verse, and he had the finest voice of any person. He said: "Bring me Mūsā b. Jaʿfar." I brought him, and he embraced him and seated him at his side, and said: "O Abū al-Ḥasan, I saw the Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib in a dream, and he recited to me such-and-such. Will you assure me that you will not rise against me or against any of my children?" He said: "By God, I will not do that, nor is it my way." He said: "You have spoken truthfully. O Rabīʿ, give him three thousand dinars and return him to his family in al-Madīnah." Al-Rabīʿ said: I arranged his departure that very night, and by morning he was already on the road, fearing impediments. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: He remained in al-Madīnah until the days of al-Rashīd. Al-Rashīd performed the pilgrimage and the two met at the tomb of the Prophet ﷺ, where al-Rashīd heard from him words that displeased him. That is what Manṣūr al-Qazzāz informed us with his chain of transmission from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṣāliḥ al-Azdī, who said: Hārūn al-Rashīd performed the pilgrimage and came to the tomb of the Prophet ﷺ as a visitor, with Quraysh and the leading men of the tribes around him, and with him was Mūsā b. Jaʿfar. When they reached the tomb, he said: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God, O cousin," boasting before those around him. Then Mūsā b. Jaʿfar drew near and said: "Peace be upon you, O father." The face of Hārūn changed, and he said: "Is this boasting, O Abū al-Ḥasan, truly?" Then al-Rashīd performed the lesser pilgrimage in Ramaḍān of the year seventy-nine, and he took Mūsā with him to Baghdad and imprisoned him there, and he died in his imprisonment. When his imprisonment grew long, he wrote to al-Rashīd, as ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad informed us with his chain of transmission, saying: Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl narrated to me: Mūsā b. Jaʿfar sent from prison a letter to al-Rashīd, which said: "No day of affliction passes from me but that with it a day of ease passes from you, until we both come to an end at a day in which there is no passing away, a day on which the followers of falsehood lose." Mūsā b. Jaʿfar died on the fifth remaining day of Rajab of this year. From Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Ḥamdān al-Qaṭīʿī, who said: I heard al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm al-Khallāl say: "No matter ever troubled me but that I went to the tomb of Mūsā b. Jaʿfar and sought intercession through him, and God made easy for me what I desired." Hushaym b. Bashīr b. His son Hushaym sought ḥadīth and desired it, but his father prevented him. He wrote down ḥadīth until he came to sit with Abū Shaybah, the judge, and he used to debate with Abū Shaybah in jurisprudence. Hushaym fell ill, and Abū Shaybah said: "What has happened to that young man who used to come to us?" They said: "He is sick." He said: "Arise with us so that we may visit him." All the people of the gathering arose to visit him until they came to the house of Bashīr and entered upon Hushaym. A man came to Bashīr while his hand was in the ṣaḥnāh and said: "Go to your son; the judge has come to visit him." Bashīr came while the judge was in his house. When the judge left, he said to his son: "O my son, I used to prevent you from seeking ḥadīth, but today I will not. The judge has come to my door; when did I ever hope for this?" From ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Dunyā, who said: Someone who heard ʿAmr b. ʿAwn narrated to me, saying: For ten years before his death, Hushaym used to pray the dawn prayer with the ablution of the previous night prayer.
