غَزْوِ الْخَزَرِ بِلَادَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَفِي سَنَةُ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَمَانِينَ وَمِائَةٍ خَرَجَ الْخَزَرُ بِسَبَبِ ابْنَةِ خَاقَانَ مِنْ بَابِ الْأَبْوَابِ، فَأَوْقَعُوا بِالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ، وَسَبَوْا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ مِائَةِ أَلْفِ رَأْسٍ، وَانْتَهَكُوا أَمْرًا عَظِيمًا لَمْ يُسْمَعْ بِمِثْلِهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ، فَوَلَّى الرَّشِيدُ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مَزْيَدٍ مُضَافًا إِلَى أَذْرَبِيجَانَ، وَوَجَّهَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ، وَأَنْزَلَ خُزَيْمَةَ بْنَ خَازِمٍ نَصِيبِينَ رِدْءًا لِأَهْلِ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ. وَقِيلَ: إِنَّ سَبَبَ خُرُوجِهِمْ أَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ سَلْمٍ قَتَلَ الْمُنَجِّمَ السُّلَمِيَّ، فَدَخَلَ ابْنُهُ بِلَادَ الْخَزَرِ، وَاسْتَجَاشَهُمْ عَلَى سَعِيدٍ، فَخَرَجُوا وَدَخَلُوا أَرْمِينِيَّةَ مِنَ الثُّلْمَةِ، فَانْهَزَمَ سَعِيدٌ، وَأَقَامُوا نَحْوَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْمًا، فَوَجَّهَ الرَّشِيدُ خُزَيْمَةَ بْنَ خَازِمٍ، وَيَزِيدَ بْنَ مَزْيَدٍ، فَأَصْلَحَا مَا أَفْسَدَ سَعِيدٌ، وَأَخْرَجَا الْخَزَرَ، وَسَدَّا الثُّلْمَةَ.
Translation
✧ The raid of the Khazar upon the lands of Islam In the year one hundred and eighty-three, the Khazar came out on account of the daughter of the Khāqān from the Gate of the Gates (Bāb al-Abwāb), and they fell upon the Muslims and the People of the Covenant, and they took captive more than one hundred thousand persons, and they committed a grave matter the like of which had not been heard of in the land. So al-Rashīd appointed Yazīd b. Mazyad over Armenia in addition to Azerbaijan, and sent him against them, and he made Khuzayma b. Khāzim encamp at Naṣībīn as a support for the people of Armenia. It is said: the reason for their coming out was that Saʿīd b. Salm killed the astrologer al-Sulamī, so his son entered the land of the Khazar and sought their aid against Saʿīd; so they came out and entered Armenia through the breach, and Saʿīd was defeated, and they remained about seventy days. Then al-Rashīd sent Khuzayma b. Khāzim and Yazīd b. Mazyad, and they set right what Saʿīd had corrupted, and expelled the Khazar, and blocked the breach.
