✧ Those who rebelled in al-Andalus against its ruler In the year one hundred and eighty-one, Bahlūl b. Marzūq, known as Abū al-Ḥajjāj, rebelled in the region of the frontier (al-thaghr) of the land of al-Andalus. He entered Saraqusṭa and took possession of it. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the paternal uncle of its ruler al-Ḥakam, known as al-Balansī, came to Bahlūl there; he had been heading toward the Franks. In it ʿUbayda b. Ḥumayd rebelled in Ṭulayṭila. Al-Ḥakam ordered the commander ʿAmrūs b. Yūsuf, who was in the city of Ṭalabīra, to fight the people of Ṭulayṭila. He fought them frequently and pressed them hard. Then ʿAmrūs b. Yūsuf corresponded with men of the people of Ṭulayṭila known as the Banū Makhshī, and won them over. They fell upon ʿUbayda b. Ḥumayd and killed him, and carried his head to ʿAmrūs. He sent the head to al-Ḥakam and lodged the Banū Makhshī with him. There were old blood feuds between them and the Berbers who were in the city of Ṭalabīra, so the Berbers scaled the walls against them and killed them. ʿAmrūs sent their heads together with the head of ʿUbayda to al-Ḥakam and informed him of the news. [Then ʿAmrūs exerted his utmost effort to win over the people of Ṭulayṭila by corresponding with them until they admitted him into the city. When he had gained control of it, he built the fortress at the gate of its bridge and made it strong, and perfected its affair. Then he worked to kill the men of Ṭulayṭila, cut off their evil, and put an end to their malady, to consolidate the kingdom. He prepared a ruse for the scheme: he made a show of slaughtering cattle in it and ordered that the people's entry be through one gate and their exit] through another gate. Whoever of them entered was diverted to another place, and they killed him, until seven hundred men of them were killed. Thus that region became settled.
