✧ The death of Hishām In the year one hundred and eighty, Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, ruler of al-Andalus, died in Ṣafar. His governorship lasted seven years and seven months, and his age was thirty-nine years and four months. His kunyah was Abū al-Walīd, and his mother was an umm walad. He was fair with reddish-white complexion, with a squint in his eyes. He left behind five sons. He was a resolute governor, possessed of judgment, courage, and justice, virtuous, loving the people of goodness and righteousness, severe against enemies, and desirous of jihād. Among the finest of his deeds was that he sent out a collector who took the zakāh according to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet during the days of his governorship. He it was who completed the building of the congregational mosque in the city of Qurṭubah, for his father had died before finishing it, and he built mosques along with it. The glory of Islam in his days and the humiliation of unbelief reached such a point that a man died in his days and bequeathed that a Muslim captive be ransomed from his estate. That was sought, but no captive was found in the abode of the unbelievers to be bought and ransomed, because of the weakness of the enemy and the strength of the Muslims. (His virtues are many; the people of al-Andalus have mentioned them often and exaggerated, even saying that in his conduct he resembled ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, may Allah have mercy on him).
