فَأَحْلَفَهُ وَاسْتَوْفَى عَلَيْهِ الْأَيْمَانَ مِنَ الْحَجِّ رَاجِلًا، وَطَلَاقِ نِسَائِهِ، وَعِتْقِ الْمَمَالِيكِ، وَتَسْبِيلِ مَا يَمْلِكُهُ، ثُمَّ نَهَضَ إِلَيْهَا فَأَحْلَفَهَا بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ فَمَا لَبِثَ إِلَّا نَحْوَ شَهْرٍ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ، وَوَلِيَ الرَّشِيدُ فَبَعَثَ يَخْطُبُ ✧ Mention of the prominent men who died in this year Ismāʿīl b. Zakariyyā b. Murra, Abū Ziyād al-Khulqānī Ismāʿīl b. Zakariyyā b. Murra, Abū Ziyād al-Khulqānī, mawlā of Asad b. Khuzayma, was nicknamed Shaqūṣan. Of Kufan origin, he heard Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, Abū Isḥāq, al-Aʿmash and others, and he was trustworthy. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: Ismāʿīl b. Zakariyyā was a merchant in foodstuffs and other things, and he was from the people of Kufa. He settled in Baghdad in the suburb of Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭaba and died there at the beginning of the year one hundred and seventy-three, at the age of sixty-five. Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd, Abū ʿUmar al-Maʿāfirī Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd, Abū ʿUmar al-Maʿāfirī. ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb narrated from him, and it is said that he was the one who helped Ibn Wahb in composing his books, and he had devoted worship and virtue. He died in Alexandria in this year. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Mawālī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Mawālī, and it is said: Ibn Zayd b. Abī al-Mawālī, Abū Muḥammad al-Madanī, mawlā of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and it is said: mawlā of Abū Rāfiʿ, the mawlā of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He related from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī and Ibn al-Munkadir. Al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī, al-Qaʿnabī, and Qutayba narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. And he died in this year. Ghādir, concubine of al-Hādī Ghādir, concubine of al-Hādī. Jaʿfar b. Qudāma related, saying: Mūsā al-Hādī had a concubine called Ghādir, and she was among the most beautiful of women in face and singing, and he loved her intensely. While she was singing to him one day, a thought and absent-mindedness came over him and his color changed. Those present asked him about that, and he said: It occurred to my mind that I shall die, and that my brother Hārūn will assume the caliphate and marry this concubine of mine. It was said to him: We seek refuge in God for you, and we would all die before you. He ordered his brother to be brought and acquainted him with what had occurred to him, and he answered him with what would remove this thought. He said: I will not be satisfied until you swear to me that if I die you will not marry her. He made him swear, and he exacted from him the oaths of going on pilgrimage on foot, divorcing his wives, freeing his slaves, and giving away as charity all that he owned. Then he went to her and made her swear the like of that. He remained only about a month until he died, and al-Rashīd assumed power. He sent to propose to the concubine, and she said: What about my oath and your oath? He said: I shall expiate for all of them and go on pilgrimage on foot. So he married her, and his infatuation with her exceeded his brother's, to the point that she would place her head on his lap and sleep, and he would not move until she awoke. One day while she was thus, she woke up startled, weeping. He asked her about that, and she said: I saw your brother just now, and he was saying: You broke your promise after I came to dwell with the inhabitants of the graves And you forgot me and perjured yourself with your false, wicked oaths And you married, O treacherous one, my brother—true is he who named you Ghādir You have passed the evening among the people of the lands while I have gone to the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise May the new companion not bring you joy, and may misfortunes not turn away from you And you shall join me before morning, and you shall be where I have gone By God, O Commander of the Faithful, it was as if, when I heard them, they were written in my heart, so that I did not forget a single word of them. Al-Rashīd said to her: These are confused dreams. She said: Not at all. She did not cease trembling and shaking until she died before him. Hīlāna, concubine of al-Rashīd Hīlāna, concubine of al-Rashīd. Al-Aṣmaʿī related, saying: Al-Rashīd was intensely in love with Hīlāna, and she had previously belonged to Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak. One day before the caliphate he entered upon Yaḥyā, and she met him in a passageway and took hold of his sleeve and said: We shall never have a day with you. He said to her: Then what is the way to that? She said: You take me from this old man. So he said to Yaḥyā: I would like you to give me so-and-so. He gave her to him, until she came to dominate him. She used to say often: hī, except that he, so he named her Hīlāna. She remained with him for three years, then she died, and he grieved for her intensely and recited: I said, when they consigned you to the earth And grief surged in my breast Go, for by God, nothing will ever gladden me After you, for the rest of time Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related, saying: When Hīlāna, the concubine of al-Rashīd, died, he ordered al-ʿAbbās b. al-Aḥnaf to compose an elegy for her, and he said: O you at whose death the graves rejoiced Time aimed my misfortune and struck you I seek a companion but I find no comforter Except my wandering where I used to see you A king wept for you, and his grief after you was long If he could, with his kingdom he would ransom you He guards his heart against women out of jealous care Lest any other than you dwell in the sanctuary of his heart He ordered for him forty thousand dirhams, ten thousand for each line, and said: If you had added more, we would have given you more. (In this year died Mawraqāṭ, king of Galicia, of the lands of al-Andalus, and after him reigned Burmund b. Qulūriya the priest, then he renounced the kingdom, became a monk, and placed his nephew in the kingship. His nephew's reign was in the year one hundred and seventy-five.) In this year died Sallām b. Abī Muṭīʿ (with doubling of the lām), and Juwayriya b. Asmāʾ b. ʿUbayd al-Baṣrī, and Marwān b. Muʿāwiya b. al-Ḥārith b. Asmāʾ al-Fazārī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh. His death occurred in Makkah suddenly.
