Translation
✧ The rebellion of Sulaymān and ʿAbdullāh, the two sons of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, against their brother Hishām In the year one hundred and seventy-two, and it is said in the year one hundred and seventy-three, and this is the correct view, Sulaymān and ʿAbdullāh, the two sons of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām, the ruler of al-Andalus, rebelled against obedience to their brother Hishām in al-Andalus. Hishām had assumed power after his father, as we have mentioned. When his rule was established, his brother ʿAbdullāh, known as al-Balansī, was with him. Hishām favored him, treated him kindly, and gave him precedence, but ʿAbdullāh was not content except with sharing in his authority. Then he feared his brother Hishām, so he fled to his brother Sulaymān, who was in Ṭulayṭilah. When he left Qurṭubah, Hishām sent a force in his pursuit to bring him back, but they did not catch up with him. Hishām gathered his armies and marched to Ṭulayṭilah and besieged his two brothers there. Sulaymān had gathered and assembled a large number of people. When Hishām besieged them, Sulaymān departed from Ṭulayṭilah, leaving his son and his brother ʿAbdullāh to defend the city, and he himself marched to Qurṭubah to take possession of it. Hishām learned of the situation, but he did not move nor leave Ṭulayṭilah; rather, he remained besieging it. Sulaymān marched until he reached Shaqandah and entered it. The people of Qurṭubah came out against him fighting and defending themselves. Then Hishām sent after him his son ʿAmīd al-Mulk with a detachment of the army. When he approached him, Sulaymān fled, heading for the city of Māridah. The governor there, who was loyal to Hishām, came out against him and fought him. Sulaymān was defeated. Hishām remained at Ṭulayṭilah for two months and some days besieging it, then withdrew, after cutting down its trees, and marched to Qurṭubah. His brother ʿAbdullāh came to him without a guarantee of safety, and he honored him and treated him well. When the year one hundred and seventy-four entered, Hishām sent his son Muʿāwiyah with a large army to Tudmīr, where Sulaymān was. He fought him, and they laid waste the districts of Tudmīr and subdued its people and those within it, reaching as far as the sea. Sulaymān fled from Tudmīr and took refuge with the Berbers in the region of Balansiyah, seeking protection in that rugged, difficult terrain. Muʿāwiyah then returned to Qurṭubah. Then the situation between Hishām and Sulaymān was settled on the condition that Sulaymān take his family, children, and wealth and depart from al-Andalus. Hishām gave him sixty thousand dinars as a settlement for the inheritance of their father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. So he went to the land of the Berbers and stayed there. Mention of the rebellion of a group against Hishām as well In that year, in al-Andalus also, Saʿīd b. al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā al-Anṣārī rebelled in Shāghantah, one of the districts of Ṭarṭūshah, in eastern al-Andalus. He had taken refuge there when his father was killed, as previously mentioned. He called for the Yemeni faction and showed partisanship for them. A large number of people gathered to him, and he took possession of the city of Ṭarṭūshah, expelling its governor Yūsuf al-Qaysī. Mūsā b. Fartūn opposed him, upholding the cause of Hishām, and Muḍar agreed with him. They fought, and Saʿīd was defeated and killed. Mūsā marched to Saraqusṭah and took possession of it. Then a client of al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā, named Jaḥdar, rebelled against him with a large gathering, fought him, and Mūsā was killed. Also, Maṭrūḥ b. Sulaymān b. Yaqẓān rebelled in the city of Barshalūnah, and a large group joined him. He took possession of the city of Saraqusṭah and the city of Washqah, gaining control over that region, and his power grew strong, while Hishām was occupied with fighting his two brothers Sulaymān and ʿAbdullāh.
