✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Ḥayyān b. ʿAlī al-Kūfī Ḥayyān b. ʿAlī al-Kūfī, Abū ʿAlī, the brother of Mindal. He narrated from al-Aʿmash and Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ. Ḥajar b. al-Muthannā and Khalaf b. Hishām narrated from him. He was righteous, devout, and a jurist. Yaḥyā said: He is truthful, but in another narration from him he weakens him. He died in this year. It is also said: in the following year. Saʿīd b. al-Sāʾib al-Ṭāʾifī Saʿīd b. al-Sāʾib al-Ṭāʾifī. Sufyān and Wakīʿ narrated from him. From Sufyān who said: Saʿīd b. al-Sāʾib al-Ṭāʾifī's tears almost never dried. His tears flowed throughout his entire life. If he prayed, he wept; and if he sat reading the muṣḥaf, he wept. Sufyān said: They told me that a man reproached him for that, so he wept, then said: It is only fitting that you blame me and reproach me for shortcoming and negligence, for they have gained mastery over me. From Muḥammad b. Yazīd b. Ḥasan who said: I heard al-Thawrī say: One day I sat narrating while Saʿīd b. al-Sāʾib al-Ṭāʾifī was with us. Saʿīd began to weep until I felt pity for him, so I said: O Saʿīd, what makes you weep while you hear me mentioning the people of goodness and their deeds? He said: O Sufyān, what prevents me from weeping? When you mention the virtues of the people of goodness, I am far removed from them. He said: Sufyān says: And he had a right to weep. ʿAbd Allāh died in this year. ʿUmar b. Maymūn b. al-Rammāḥ, Abū ʿAlī ʿUmar b. Maymūn b. al-Rammāḥ, Abū ʿAlī. Judge of Balkh. He served as judge there for more than twenty years, and he was praised during his tenure, renowned for knowledge, forbearance, righteousness, and understanding. He narrated from Suhayl b. Abī Ṣāliḥ and al-Ḍaḥḥāk. Surayj b. al-Nuʿmān narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. He became blind at the end of his life and died in Balkh in Ramaḍān of this year. ʿĪsā b. Yazīd b. Bakr b. Dāb, Abū al-Walīd ʿĪsā b. Yazīd b. Bakr b. Dāb, Abū al-Walīd. One of the Banū al-Layth b. Bakr of Madinah. He came to Baghdad and resided there. He narrated from Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and Hishām b. ʿUrwa. He was a transmitter from the Arabs, abundant in adab, knowledgeable in genealogy, a memorizer of biographies, and acquainted with the battle-days of the people. However, they impugned him, saying: He adds to ḥadīths what is not in them. Khalaf al-Aḥmar attributed lying and fabricating ḥadīth to him. From Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿArafa who said: No one assumed the caliphate before al-Hādī at his age, because he was young. He loved adab and its people and gave generously for it. ʿĪsā b. Dāb used to sit with him, and he was the most literate of the people of the Ḥijāz and the most pleasant in speech. He enjoyed favor with al-Hādī, who used to say to him: I never found you long in any day or night, and whenever you were absent from my sight I wished to see no one but you. He ordered thirty thousand dinars for him. When morning came, Ibn Dāb sent his steward to demand the money. The steward met the chamberlain and conveyed his message, and he informed him that this was not up to him and that it needed a signed order. So Ibn Dāb held back. While al-Hādī was in a belvedere of his, he looked at Ibn Dāb approaching without a servant. He said to Ibrāhīm al-Ḥuddānī: Do you not see Ibn Dāb? His condition has not changed, nor has he adorned himself for us, though we favored him yesterday to see our effect on him. Ibrāhīm said to him: If the Commander of the Faithful commands me, I will hint at something of this to him. He said: No, he knows his own affair better. Ibn Dāb entered and began his talk until al-Hādī brought up something of his affair, saying: I see your garment is washed, and this is winter; one needs to wear new and soft clothing. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, my means fall short of what I need. He said: How can that be when we have directed to you from our kindness what would set your affairs aright? He said: Nothing has reached me. So he called for the keeper of the privy purse and said: Hasten this hour to give him thirty thousand dinars. It was carried before him. Al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muḥammad b. Yaʿlā al-Ḍabbī al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muḥammad b. Yaʿlā al-Ḍabbī. He heard Simāk b. Ḥarb, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, al-Aʿmash, and others. He transmitted the Qurʾānic readings from ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd. Al-Kisāʾī, al-Farrāʾ, and others narrated from him. He was a transmitter of adab and the battle-days of the Arabs, a highly learned authority, trustworthy in his transmission. From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Sarī who said: Jaḥẓa said to us: Al-Rashīd said to al-Mufaḍḍal al-Ḍabbī: What is the finest thing said about the wolf? You shall have this ring on my finger, whose price is one thousand six hundred dinars. He said: The poet's saying: He sleeps with one of his eyes and with the other guards against deaths, so he is wakeful and slumbering. He said: This was not cast upon your tongue except for the loss of the ring. And he tossed it to him. Umm Jaʿfar bought it for one thousand six hundred dinars and sent it to him, saying: I used to see you admire it. Al-Ḍabbī picked it up and said: Take it and take the dinars, for we do not give something and then take it back. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥarbī the ascetic Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥarbī the ascetic. From Ibrāhīm b. Shabīb b. Shayba who said: We used to sit together on Friday when a man came wearing a single garment wrapped around him. He sat with us and posed a question, and we continued discussing fiqh until we departed. Then he came to us the following Friday, and we answered him and asked about his dwelling. He said: I lodge in al-Kharība. We asked about his kunya, and he said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh. We desired his company and considered our gathering a gathering of fiqh. We remained thus for a time, then he stopped coming to us. Some of us said to others: What is our situation? Our gathering used to be enlivened by Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and now he makes us feel lonely. We promised one another that when morning came we would go to al-Kharība and ask about him. We came to al-Kharība, a group of us, and we were ashamed to ask about Abū ʿAbd Allāh. We looked at boys returning from the kuttāb and said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh. They said: Perhaps they mean the fisherman. We said: Yes. They said: This is his time now; he will come. We sat waiting for him, and behold, he approached wearing a rag as a waist-wrapper, with a rag on his shoulder, carrying slaughtered birds and live birds. When he saw us, he smiled at us and said: What brings you? We said: We missed you. You used to enliven our gathering; what kept you from us? He said: I shall tell you the truth. We had a neighbor from whom I used to borrow every day that garment in which I came to you. He was a stranger, and he departed to his homeland, so I had no garment in which to come to you. Would you like to enter the house and eat of what God, mighty and sublime, has provided? Some of us said to others: Enter his house. He came to the door, gave the greeting of peace, prayed a little, then entered and gave us permission, so we entered. He had brought pieces of reed mats and spread them for us, and we sat down. He went in to the woman and handed her the slaughtered birds and took the live birds, then said: I will come to you, God willing, soon. He went to the market, sold them, and bought bread for us. He came back after the woman had cooked those birds and prepared them. He served us bread and the meat of the birds, and we ate. He kept getting up and bringing us salt and water. Every time he got up, some of us said to others: Have you seen the like of this? Will you not change his situation while you are the masters of the people of Basra?! One of them said: I pledge five hundred. Another said: I pledge three hundred. And this one said and that one said. Some of them guaranteed to collect for him from others. The total collected for him in reckoning reached five thousand dirhams. They said: Let us go and bring this money to him and ask him to change what he is in. We rose and departed in our state, riding. We passed by al-Mirbad, and behold, Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, the governor of Basra, was sitting in a watchtower of his. He said: O boy, bring me Ibrāhīm b. Shabīb b. Shayba from among the people. I came and entered upon him, and he asked me about our story and whence we were coming. I told him the truth of the matter. He said: I shall beat you to showing kindness to him. O boy, bring me a purse of dirhams. It was brought, and he said: Carry this purse with this man until he delivers it to the one we have ordered. I rejoiced and rose hurrying. When I reached the door, I gave the greeting of peace, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh answered me, then came out to me. When he saw the bed and the purse on his shoulder, it was as if I had thrown ashes in his face. He turned to me with a face not like the first and said: What is between me and you? Do you wish to tempt me? I said: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, sit until I inform you. The story is such and such, and it is from one of the tyrants—meaning Muḥammad b. Sulaymān—as you know. If he had ordered me to place it wherever I saw fit, I would have returned to him and told him that I had placed it. So God, God, have mercy on yourself. He grew angrier with me, rose, entered his house, and slammed the door in my face. I kept hesitating, not knowing what to say to the governor. Then I found no alternative to the truth, so I came and told him the news. He said: A Ḥarūrī, by God! O boy, bring me the sword. It was brought, and he said: Take this man's hand until he leads you to that man. When he comes out to you, strike his neck and bring me his head. Ibrāhīm said: I said: May God set the governor aright, God, God! By God, we saw a man who is not one of the Khawārij. But I will go and bring him to you. I only wanted that as a ransom for him. He said: Then guarantee him to me. I went until I reached the door and gave the greeting of peace. The woman was lamenting and weeping, then she opened the door, concealed herself, and gave permission, so I entered. She said: What is your affair and the affair of Abū ʿAbd Allāh? I said: What is his condition? She said: He entered, inclined to the well, drew water from it, performed ablution, then prayed. Then I heard him say: O God, take me to You and do not tempt me. Then he stretched out, repeating that, and I reached him after he had passed away. There he is, dead. I said: O woman, we have a strange story, so do not speak of anything about him. I came to Muḥammad b. Sulaymān and told him the news. He said: I shall ride and pray over this man. He said: His news spread through Basra, and the governor and the common people of Basra attended his funeral. May God have mercy on him.
