Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year one hundred and seventy-two, al-Rashīd dismissed Isḥāq b. Muḥammad from al-Mawṣil, and appointed Saʿīd b. Salm al-Bāhilī. Al-Rashīd dismissed Yazīd b. Mazyad b. Zāʾida, the nephew of Maʿn b. Zāʾida, from Armenia, and appointed over it his brother ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Mahdī. In it, Isḥāq b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī raided the summer expedition. In it, al-Rashīd imposed on the people of the Sawād the tithe that used to be taken from them after the half. Yaʿqūb b. al-Manṣūr, the paternal uncle of Hārūn al-Rashīd, led the people in pilgrimage. The governors were those of the previous year. Among the events in it: Al-Rashīd set out for Marj al-Qalʿa, then scouted there for a dwelling to settle in. He had found the City of Peace burdensome and used to call it "the vapors." He went out to Marj al-Qalʿa, fell ill there, and returned. That journey was named the Journey of the Scout. In it: Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī married al-ʿAbbāsa bt. al-Mahdī. She was the first daughter of a caliph from the Banū Hāshim to be moved from one town to another; he moved her to al-Baṣra. The first daughter of a caliph to be moved among the Umayyad caliphs was Ṣafiyya bt. Muʿāwiya, who was moved to al-Baṣra to Muḥammad b. Ziyād. Al-Ṣūlī mentioned this. In it: Muʿādh b. Muʿādh assumed the judgeship. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿArafa said: Muʿādh b. Muʿādh assumed the judgeship of al-Baṣra in the year one hundred and seventy-two. He had standing and rank, but the people of al-Baṣra did not praise his conduct, and those who disliked him and the complaints against him multiplied. When he was removed from the judgeship, the people of al-Baṣra showed joy, slaughtered camels, and gave their meat as alms. He hid in his house fearing an attack on him. Then he went to al-Rashīd and apologized, and he accepted his excuse and gave him a thousand dinars. He was among the reliable authorities in hadith.
