Translation

✧ The death of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī, lord of al-Andalus In the year one hundred and seventy-one, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiya b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, lord of al-Andalus, died in Rabīʿ II; it is also said in the year one hundred and seventy-two, which is more correct. He was born in the land of Damascus — it is also said in al-ʿAlyāʾ in the region of Tadmur — in the year one hundred and thirteen, and he died in Cordoba. His son ʿAbd Allāh prayed over him. He had pledged allegiance to his son Hishām, who was at the city of Mérida as its governor, and his son Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the eldest, was at Toledo as its governor. Neither of them attended their father's death. ʿAbd Allāh, known as al-Balansī, attended it and took the oath of allegiance for his brother Hishām, and wrote to him with the news of his father's death and the emirate, and he traveled to Cordoba. The reign of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān lasted thirty-three years and some months. His kunya was Abū al-Muṭarrif; it is also said Abū Sulaymān; and it is said Abū Zayd. He had male children: eleven sons, and nine daughters. His mother was a Berber woman from the captives of Ifrīqiya. He was fair-haired, with sparse hair on the sides of his face, tall, slender of body, one-eyed, with two braids. He was eloquent and sharp-tongued, a poet, forbearing, learned, resolute, swift to rise against those who rebelled against him. He did not incline to comfort, nor settle into ease, nor entrust affairs to anyone else, nor act alone in matters by his own opinion. He was brave, bold, far-seeing, extremely cautious, generous, munificent, and he wore white often. He was compared to al-Manṣūr in his resoluteness, severity, and control of the kingdom. He built al-Ruṣāfa in Cordoba, imitating his grandfather Hishām when he built al-Ruṣāfa in Syria. When he dwelt in it, he saw in it a solitary palm tree, and he said: A palm tree appeared to us in the midst of al-Ruṣāfa, far away in the land of the west from the land of palms. I said: You resemble me in estrangement and separation, and in the long distance from my sons and my family. You grew up in a land where you are a stranger, so one like you in remoteness and distance is like me. May the rainclouds of the sky water you from their direction that pours and continues from the two Simāks with heavy rain. And the Umayyads from the east sought him out. Among the famous ones was ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar b. Marwān, the last descendant of the Umayyads, who was the cause of cutting off the Abbasid call in al-Andalus, and with him were eleven of his sons.
