Translation

✧ The succession of his son Hisham ʿAbd al-Raḥmān had covenanted to his son Hisham, though he was not the eldest of his sons, for Sulaymān was older than him. But he discerned in him vigour and the capacity to take up this matter, and for this reason he covenanted to him. When his father died, he was at Mārida, governing it and overseeing its affairs. His brother Sulaymān, who was older than him, was in the city of Ṭulayṭila. He sought the matter for himself and envied his brother Hisham for his father's preferring him over himself. He concealed treachery and rebellion towards him. His brother ʿAbd Allāh, known as al-Balansī, was present in Qurṭuba with his father. When he died, ʿAbd Allāh renewed the oath of allegiance to his brother Hisham after praying over his father. He wrote to his brother Hisham informing him of their father's death and the oath of allegiance to him. He set out at once for Qurṭuba and entered it in six days, and took possession of the kingship. ʿAbd Allāh went out to his house, showing obedience to him, but in his heart was otherwise.
