Translation
✧ Mention of the Caliphate of al-Hādī Allegiance was pledged to his son Mūsā al-Hādī on the day al-Mahdī died, while he was residing in Jurjān, fighting the people of Ṭabaristān. When al-Mahdī died, al-Rashīd was with him at Māsabadhān. The mawālī and commanders came to him and said: If the army learns of al-Mahdī's death, you cannot be safe from disturbance. The right course is to call among them for return, until you bury him in Baghdādh. Hārūn said: Summon to me my father Yaḥyā b. Khālid. Yaḥyā was in charge of what belonged to al-Rashīd of the affairs of the West, from al-Anbār to Ifrīqiyya. Yaḥyā was summoned to al-Rashīd, and he said: What do you say about what these men have proposed? And he told him the news. He said: I do not think that is right, because this will not remain hidden, and I do not feel safe, if the army learns, that they will cling to his litter and say: We will not let go until we are given for three years or more, and they will make arbitrary demands and go to extremes. Rather I think he should be buried, may God have mercy on him, here, and you should send Nuṣayr to the Commander of the Faithful al-Hādī with the seal, the staff, condolence, and congratulations, for the people will not find his departure objectionable since he is on the postal route of the region; and you should order two hundred dinars as rewards for those of the army who follow you, and call among them for return, so that they will have no concern other than their families. He did that. When the army received the dirhams, they called out: Baghdādh! Baghdādh! and hurried to it. When they reached it and learned the news of al-Mahdī, they came to Bāb al-Rabīʿ, burned it, released those who were in the prisons, and demanded their stipends. When al-Rashīd arrived in Baghdādh, al-Khayzurān sent to Rabīʿ and to Yaḥyā b. Khālid summoning them to consult them about that. Rabīʿ entered upon her, but Yaḥyā refrained because of what he knew of al-Hādī's jealousy. He gathered the funds until he gave the army for two years, and they fell silent. Al-Hādī wrote to Rabīʿ a letter threatening him with death, and wrote to Yaḥyā thanking him and ordering him to take charge of al-Rashīd's affairs. Rabīʿ loved Yaḥyā and trusted him. He consulted him about what he should do out of fear of al-Hādī. He advised him to send his son al-Faḍl on the road to al-Hādī with gifts and presents, and to make excuses. He did so, and al-Hādī was pleased with him. Rabīʿ had made his will to Yaḥyā b. Khālid. Allegiance was taken for al-Hādī in Baghdādh, and al-Rashīd wrote to the regions announcing the death of al-Mahdī and the taking of allegiance for al-Hādī. Nuṣayr the servant traveled to al-Hādī at Jurjān, and he learned of al-Mahdī's death and the allegiance to him. He called for departure and rode on the postal mounts with great haste, reaching in twenty days. When he arrived, he appointed Rabīʿ as his vizier.
