Zayd b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib Mention of the notable persons who died in this year Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib [ ؓ ], Abū Muḥammad al-Hāshimī al-Madīnī. He narrated from his father and from ʿIkrimah. Narrated from him: Ibn Isḥāq, Mālik, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, and Ibn Abī al-Zinād. He was one of the generous ones. Al-Manṣūr appointed him for five years, then became angry with him, dismissed him, confiscated everything he owned, and imprisoned him in Baghdad. He remained imprisoned until al-Manṣūr died, then al-Mahdī released him and returned to him what had been taken from him, and he remained with him. And from ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ḥasan and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās [b. Muḥammad], they said: The first thing by which the nobility of al-Ḥasan b. Zayd was known was that his father died while he was a boy, leaving a debt of four thousand dinars. Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd swore that no roof of a house would shade his head except the roof of a mosque or the roof of a man's house whom he would speak to about a need, until he paid off his father's debt. And no roof of a house shaded his head until his father's debt was paid. Al-Ḥasan died at al-Ḥājir, five miles from Madinah, while he was heading to Makkah from Iraq in this year, and he was eighty-five years old. Al-Mahdī prayed over him. The transmitter said: This al-Ḥasan is the father of the noble lady Nafīsah ؓ who is buried in the Egyptian lands. Ḥammād b. Salamah 902 - Ḥammād b. Salamah, Abū Salamah, a client of Banū Tamīm. He was the son of the sister of Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl. He was a learned, devout man, who held himself to account and did not waste a single moment in anything other than obedience. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad said: If it were said to Ḥammād b. Salamah, "You will die tomorrow," he would not have been able to add anything to his deeds. He used to sell cloth; if he profited one ḥabbah or two, he would leave. And from Muqātil b. Ṣāliḥ al-Khurāsānī, who said: I entered upon Ḥammād b. Salamah [and there was] nothing in his house except a mat on which he sat, a muṣḥaf from which he recited, a bag containing his knowledge, and a water vessel for his ablution. While I was sitting with him, someone knocked on the door. He said, "O little girl, go out and see who this is." She said, "The messenger of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān." He said, "Tell him to enter alone." He entered and handed him a letter, and in it was: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. From Muḥammad b. Sulaymān to Ḥammād b. Salamah. To proceed: May God grant you a morning like that which He grants to His friends and the people of obedience to Him. A question has arisen, and we ask you about it. Peace. He said, "O little girl, bring the inkwell." Then he said to me, "Turn over the letter and write: To proceed: And may God grant you a morning like that which He grants to His friends and the people of obedience to Him. We met the scholars and they did not go to anyone. If a question has arisen, come to us and ask us about what appears to you. If you come to me, do not come except alone, and do not bring your cavalry and infantry, for then I would not advise you nor advise myself. Peace. While I was with him, there was a knock on the door. He said, "O little girl, go out and see who this is." She said, "Muḥammad b. Sulaymān." He said, "Tell him to enter alone." He entered, greeted, then sat before him. He said, "What is wrong with me that when I look at you I am filled with terror?" Ḥammād said, "I heard Thābit al-Bunānī say: I heard Anas b. Mālik say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'When a scholar desires by his knowledge the face of God, everything fears him; and when he desires to amass treasures by it, he fears everything.'" Then he said, "[Forty] thousand dirhams, take them to help you in what you are upon." He said, "Return them to the one you wronged with them." He said, "By God, I give you only what I inherited." He said, "I have no need of it. Remove it from me, may God remove your burdens from you." He said, "Then we will distribute it." He said, "Perhaps if I distribute it justly, some of those who do not receive from it will say he was not just. Remove it from me, may God remove your burdens from you." [Ibn al-Jawzī said]: Ḥammād b. Salamah transmitted from a great many of the tābiʿūn. He died in this year in the mosque while praying. And from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī, from his father, who said: I saw Ḥammād b. Salamah in a dream and said, "What did God do with you?" He said, "Good." I said, "Then what?" He said, "It was said to me: Long have you wearied yourself, so today I will prolong your rest and the rest of the weary in this world. Excellent, excellent! What have you prepared for them?" Ḥammād ʿAjrad Ḥammād ʿAjrad. He is Ḥammād b. ʿUmar b. Yūnus b. Kulayb, a client of Banū Sawāʾah b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah. He is called Abū ʿAmr, and he was a Kufan. It is also said: He was a Wāsiṭī. It is said that a Bedouin passed by him while he was a boy playing with the children on a very cold day, and he was naked. He said to him, "You have stripped yourself, O boy," so he was named ʿAjrad, and mutaʿajrid means naked. He was a libertine, shameless, and witty. He was a drinking companion of al-Walīd b. Yazīd, and he exchanged satires with Bashshār b. Burd, who was a stallion among the excellent poets, and he held his own against him. Bashshār used to cry out because of him. He came to Baghdad in the days of al-Mahdī. And from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, who said: In the days of al-Mahdī there came to us Ḥammād ʿAjrad, Muṭīʿ b. Iyās al-Kinānī, and Yaḥyā b. Ziyād. They stayed near us, and they were unbearable in wickedness and debauchery. Muṭīʿ b. Iyās, Ḥammād ʿAjrad, and Yaḥyā b. Ziyād professed zandaqah. Ibn Qutaybah mentioned in "Ṭabaqāt al-Shuʿarāʾ" that there were three in Kufa called "the Ḥammāds": Ḥammād ʿAjrad, Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah, and Ḥammād b. al-Zibriqān the grammarian. They were companions, and all of them were accused of zandaqah. Ḥammād ʿAjrad is the one who said: Verily the generous man hides from you his hardship until you see him rich while he is exhausted; and the miser has pretexts over his wealth, blue-eyed, with black faces upon them. If you are too proud to give little and cannot afford abundance, generosity does not appear. Spread bounty, and let not its smallness prevent you, for all that fills poverty is praiseworthy. Ḥammād b. Isḥāq narrated from his father, who said: Ḥafṣ b. Abī Burdah and Ḥammād ʿAjrad met, and Ḥafṣ was bleary-eyed, flat-nosed, unkempt, and ugly-faced. Ḥafṣ began to disparage Muraqqish and criticize his poetry, so Ḥammād said: There was in your eyes, O Ḥafṣ, enough to distract you, and a nose like a stick, from what you pursue. You pursue a solecism in the speech of Muraqqish, while your face is entirely built upon solecism. Your ears are iqwāʾ, your nose is mukaffaʾ, and your eyes are īṭāʾ, so you are patched together. ʿUmar al-Kalwadhānī 904 - ʿUmar al-Kalwadhānī. The one who was appointed over the killing of the zanādiqah. He died in this year, and Ḥamdawayh took his place, and he is Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā from the people of Maysān. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥuṣayn b. Abī al-Ḥurr al-ʿAnbarī 905 - ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥuṣayn b. Abī al-Ḥurr al-ʿAnbarī. The judge of Basra. He heard from Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, and Saʿīd al-Jurayrī. Narrated from him: Ibn Mahdī. He was a trustworthy jurist. He was appointed judge in the year fifty-six, after Sawwār b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnbarī. And from Abū Sahl al-Rāzī, who said: Judgement was never shared between any two persons except between ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan and ʿUmar b. ʿĀmir over the judgeship of Basra. They used to sit together in the assembly and together judge between the people. He said: Some people brought before them a slave girl who did not grow pubic hair. ʿUmar b. ʿĀmir said about her, "This is a virtue in the body," while ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan said, "Everything that deviates from the natural constitution is a defect." And from al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī, who said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī say: We were at a funeral in which ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan was present, and he was the judge. When the bier was placed, he sat down and the people sat around him. I asked him about a question and he erred in it, so I said, "May God set you right, the correct opinion in this question is such-and-such." He bowed his head for a while, then raised his head and said, "Then I retract, and I am humbled. Then I retract, and I am humbled. To be a tail in truth is dearer to me than to be a head in falsehood." And from Abū ʿAlī Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm al-Qurashī, who said: Our companions told us that al-Mahdī wrote to ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan, who was the judge of Basra, a letter, and ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan read it and rejected it. So ʿUbayd Allāh was brought to al-Mahdī, who rebuked him. Among what he rebuked him for, he said to him, "You rejected my letter." ʿUbayd Allāh said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful, I did not reject your letter, but it was grammatically incorrect." Al-Mahdī accepted his statement, rewarded him, and returned him to his post. ʿUbayd Allāh died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah in this year, and it is also said that he died in the year seventy-eight. Ghawth b. Sulaymān b. Ziyād b. Rabīʿah b. Nuʿaym Ghawth b. Sulaymān b. Ziyād b. Rabīʿah b. Nuʿaym, Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥaḍramī. He was born in the year ninety-four, and he held the judgeship [in Egypt] three times during the days of al-Manṣūr and al-Mahdī. Narrated from him: Ibn Wahb and al-Wāqidī. The last to narrate from him in Iraq was Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī. And from Ghawth b. Sulaymān, who said: The Commander of the Faithful Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr sent for me, and I was brought to him. He said to me, "O Ghawth, your Ḥimyarite woman has brought a dispute against me to you concerning her stipulations." I said, "Would the Commander of the Faithful be pleased to make me judge over him?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Judgement has conditions; will the Commander of the Faithful bear them?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Let the Commander of the Faithful order her to appoint an agent and to have two virtuous servants, whom the Commander of the Faithful deems upright against himself, bear witness to her agency." He did so, and she appointed a servant and sent with him the document of her dower, and the two servants testified to her agency. I said to him, "The agency is complete. If the Commander of the Faithful sees fit to sit level with the opponent in his assembly, let him do so." He descended from his cushion and sat with the opponent. The agent handed me the dower document, and I read it to him. I said, "Does the Commander of the Faithful acknowledge what is in it?" He said, "Yes." I said, "I see in the document stipulations that are emphasized, by which the marriage between you was completed. Do you think, O Commander of the Faithful, that if you had proposed to her without stipulating this condition for her, she would have married you?" He said, "No." I said, "Then by this condition the marriage was completed, and you are the most entitled to fulfill her condition for her." He said, "You knew when you seated me in this assembly that you would judge against me." I said, "Increase my reward and let me go, O Commander of the Faithful." He said, "Rather, your reward is upon the one in whose favor you judged." And he ordered for me a reward and an honorific robe, and he ordered me to judge between the people of Kufa. I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, this is not my city, and I have no knowledge of its people." He said, "There is no escape from that." I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, I will judge between them. When I call out for anyone who has a need in a dispute and no one comes, will you permit me to return to my city?" He said, "[Yes." He said:] So I sat and judged [between them]. Then the disputants ceased, and I called for the disputants, but no one came, so I departed immediately for Egypt. Abū Saʿīd said: And ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. Farqad narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥakam narrated to us, saying: Ḥammād b. al-Miswar Abū Rajāʾ narrated to us, saying: A woman came from the countryside in a litter while Ghawth was the judge of Egypt at that time. She encountered Ghawth b. Sulaymān at the saddlers' shops while he was going to the mosque. She complained to him of her affair and told him of her need. He dismounted from his mount at one of the saddlers' shops before reaching the mosque, wrote for her regarding her need, and then rode to the mosque. The woman departed saying, "By God, your mother was right when she named you Ghawth (aid). By God, you are indeed an aid." He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. Qays b. al-Rabīʿ, Abū Muḥammad al-Asadī Qays b. al-Rabīʿ, Abū Muḥammad al-Asadī, from the descendants of al-Ḥārith b. Qays. He heard from Qays b. ʿAmr, Ibn Murrah, Muḥārib b. Dithār, Hishām b. ʿUrwah, and others. Narrated from him: Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū Muʿāwiyah, ʿAffān, and others. ʿAffān said: Qays was trustworthy. Sharīk said: He left behind no one like him. He died in this year, and it is also said: in the year seven, and it is also said: in the year five, and it is also said: in the year six. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUlāthah Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUlāthah b. ʿAlqamah b. Mālik, Abū al-Yasar al-ʿUqaylī. He narrated from Hishām b. Ḥassān, al-Awzāʿī, and others. Narrated from him: Ibn al-Mubārak, Wakīʿ, and others. He was a judge in the eastern side of Baghdad during the time of al-Mahdī. And it is said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUlāthah was called "the judge of the jinn." That was because there was a well between Ḥarrān and Ḥiṣn Maslamah, and whoever drank from it, the jinn would strike him. He said: He stood over it and said, "O jinn, we have judged between you and mankind: to them is the day, and to you is the night." He said: So a man, if he drew water from it during the day, nothing would afflict him. And from al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Dūrī, who said: I heard Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn say: Muḥammad b. ʿUlāthah is trustworthy. The compiler said: It has been narrated to us from Abū al-Fatḥ al-Azdī al-Ḥāfiẓ that he criticized Ibn ʿUlāthah, and this is not preserved from anyone else, except that al-Bukhārī said: There is something to be examined in his memory. Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī al-Marwazī He died in this year. Muḥammad b. Maymūn, Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī al-Marwazī. From Abū Ayyūb Sulaymān b. Isḥāq al-Jallāb, who said: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī say: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan said: A neighbor of Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī wanted to sell his house. It was said to him, "For how much will you sell it?" He said, "For two thousand, the price of the house, and two thousand for the right of being Abū Ḥamzah's neighbor." He said: That reached Abū Ḥamzah, and he sent him four thousand and said, "Take it and do not sell your house." And from Muʿādh b. Khālid, who said: I heard Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī say: "I have not eaten my fill for thirty years, unless I had a guest." Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī was among the trustworthy people. When someone who had traveled to him fell ill at his place, he would look into what he needed for his care and order it to be provided. His name was Muḥammad b. Maymūn, and he did not sell sugar; rather, he was called al-Sukkarī because of the sweetness of his speech. Al-Ghalābī narrated from Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn: that Abū Ḥamzah, whenever a man from among his neighbors fell ill, would give in charity the equivalent of what would be spent on a sick person, in gratitude for the illness that had been averted from him. Al-Bukhārī said: Muḥammad b. Maymūn died in the year sixty-eight. Bishr b. Muḥammad narrated that to me. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnazī Mindal b. ʿAlī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnazī. He narrated from Abū Isḥāq al-Shīnānī, ʿĀṣim, al-Aʿmash, and others. It was said that his name was ʿAmr, and his nickname was Mindal, but it prevailed over him. Yaḥyā said: Mindal is acceptable. And once he said: weak. Yaʿqūb b. Shaybah said: He was a virtuous, truthful man, but weak in ḥadīth. He died in [Ramaḍān] of this year, and it was said: in the year sixty-seven. Muʿādh b. Muʿādh said: I entered al-Kūfah and saw no one more scrupulous than Mindal b. ʿAlī. From ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr al-Razzāq, who said: Abū Hishām narrated to us, saying: A slave girl passed by Mindal b. ʿAlī with a basket containing ripe dates, while the ḥadīth scholars were around him. She stopped to look and listen. Mindal glanced at her and realized that the basket had been sent as a gift for him, so he said: "Bring it forward." She brought it forward, and he said to those around him: "Eat what is in it." The slave girl returned to her master, having been delayed. He said: "How quickly you have come!" She said: "I stopped to listen to this shaykh, and he said: 'Bring the basket forward,' so I did, and those around him ate what was in it." Her master was an Arab man, so he said to her: "You are free for the sake of Allāh, mighty and majestic." In this year died Yaḥyā b. Salamah b. Kuhayl, and al-Ḥasan b.
