Translation

✧ Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān Mention of the notables who died in this year. Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān, Abū Saʿīd al-Khurāsānī. He was born in Herāt, grew up in Nīshāpūr, and traveled in pursuit of knowledge. He met a group of the Successors, such as: ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār, the client of Ibn ʿUmar; Abū al-Zubayr Muḥammad b. Muslim; ʿAmr b. Dīnār; Abū Ḥāzim al-Aʿraj; and Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī. He came to Baghdad and related ḥadīth there, then moved to Makkah and resided there until the end of his life. He was trustworthy, righteous, devout, and generous, and he inclined toward irjāʾ. From Mālik b. Sulaymān: Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān had a splendid stipend from the public treasury, and he was generous with it. One day he was asked a question in the caliph's assembly and said: "I do not know." They said to him: "You take such-and-such every month and you are not good at a [single] question?" He said: "I take it only for what I am good at. If I took it for what I am not good at, the treasury would be exhausted, but what I am not good at would never be." The Commander of the Faithful admired his answer, ordered a splendid gift for him, and increased his stipend. From Abū Zurʿah, who said: I heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal — when Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān was mentioned in his presence, and he was reclining due to an illness, he sat up straight — and said: "It is not fitting that the righteous be mentioned while one is reclining." Then Aḥmad said: A man from the companions of Ibn al-Mubārak related to me, saying: "I saw Ibn al-Mubārak in a dream, and with him was an awe-inspiring elder. I said: 'Who is this with you?' He said: 'Do you not know? This is Sufyān al-Thawrī.' I said: 'From where have you come?' He said: 'We visit Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān every day.' I said: 'Where do you visit him?' He said: 'In the abode of the truthful ones, the abode of Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā.'" Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān died in Makkah in this year. Jarīr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān b. Khaybar Jarīr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān b. Hārūn, who said: "I saw the Lord of Might, Exalted is He, in a dream, and He said to me: 'O Abū Yazīd, do not write from Jarīr b. ʿUthmān.' I said: 'O Lord, I know nothing but good from him.' He said to me: 'O Abū Yazīd, do not write from him, for he reviles ʿAlī.'" From Saʿīd b. Shādī al-Wāsiṭī, who said: I was in the assembly of Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and a man said to him: "O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, I saw Yazīd b. Hārūn in a dream, and I said to him: 'What has God done with you?'" "He said: 'He forgave me, had mercy on me, and reproached me.' I said: 'He forgave you, had mercy on you, and reproached you?' He said: 'Yes. He said to me: "O Yazīd b. Hārūn, did you write from Jarīr b. ʿUthmān?" I said: "O Lord of Might, I knew nothing but good." He said: "He used to hate Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib."'"
