✧ The death of al-Ḥakīm al-Muqannaʿ Then the year one hundred and sixty-three AH began. In it al-Muqannaʿ the zindīq was besieged. He had arisen in Khurāsān and professed transmigration of souls. A multitude of the rabble, the foolish among mankind, and the lowly among the common people followed him in his ignorance and misguidance, and they defended him from the armies in that year. When this year came, he took refuge in the fortress of Kashsh. Saʿīd al-Ḥarashī besieged him and pressed him hard in the siege. When he sensed defeat, he swallowed poison and poisoned his women, so they all died—may the curse of God be upon them. The Islamic army entered his fortress, severed his head, and sent it to al-Mahdī. Al-Mahdī was in Aleppo when the head of al-Muqannaʿ reached him. Ibn Khallikān said: Al-Muqannaʿ al-Khurāsānī—it is said his name was ʿAṭāʾ, and it is said Ḥakīm; the former is more widely known. He was first a fuller, then he claimed divinity, although he was one-eyed and ugly in appearance. He used to fashion for himself a face of gold. A great number of the ignorant followed him in his ignorance. He used to show the people a moon that could be seen from a distance of two months' journey, then it would disappear, so their belief in him grew great, and they defended him with weapons. He claimed—may God curse him, and exalted be God above what the wrongdoers say, in great exaltation—that God appeared in the form of Adam, and for this reason the angels prostrated to him; then in Noah; then in the prophets one by one; then He moved to Abū Muslim al-Khurāsānī; then He moved to him. When the Muslims besieged him in his fortress, which he had rebuilt in the region of Kashsh beyond the river, and which was called Sanām, he gave his women and family poison to drink, and he himself also swallowed some of it, so they all died—may God curse them all—and the Muslims took possession of all his treasuries and wealth. The expedition against the land of the Romans and the appointment of Hārūn over the army In it al-Mahdī equipped expeditions from Khurāsān and other lands to raid the Romans. He placed his son Hārūn al-Rashīd in command of all of them. He went out from Baghdad to see him off, and traveled with him for several stages. He left his son Mūsā al-Hādī as his deputy over Baghdad. In this army were al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭaba, al-Rabīʿ the chamberlain, and Khālid b. Barmak, who was like a vizier to al-Rashīd the heir apparent, and Yaḥyā b. Khālid, who was his secretary and in charge of expenditures. Al-Mahdī continued with his son to see him off until he reached the pass of the Romans at Jayḥān. There he marked out the city called al-Mahdiyya in the land of the Romans, then returned to Syria and visited Jerusalem. Al-Rashīd marched into the land of the Romans with great armies, and God granted them many conquests, and they gained very abundant spoils. Khālid b. Barmak had in that an excellent effect which no one else had. They sent the good news with Sulaymān b. Barmak to al-Mahdī, and al-Mahdī honored him and gave him a generous gift. The appointment of Hārūn al-Rashīd over the lands of the Maghrib, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and who led the pilgrimage this year In it al-Mahdī appointed his son Hārūn al-Rashīd over the lands of the Maghrib, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and placed Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak over his correspondence. He appointed and dismissed a number of governors. Who led the people in pilgrimage this year ʿAlī b. al-Mahdī led the people in pilgrimage in it. Al-Mahdī dismissed his paternal uncle ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī from the Jazīra During al-Mahdī's journey with his son Hārūn, he dismissed ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī from the Jazīra and appointed in his place Zufar b. ʿĀṣim al-Hilālī. The reason was that al-Mahdī took the road of Mosul on this journey, and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad was over the Jazīra. When he reached the land of the Jazīra, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad did not meet him, nor prepare for him, nor repair the bridges. He held that against him. When he met him, he frowned at him and showed him harshness. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad sent him gifts that did not please him, so he returned them and grew more angry with him, and spoke roughly to him. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad answered him back, so he ordered him imprisoned and dismissed from the Jazīra. He remained in prison until he was satisfied with him. Al-Mahdī was brought some zanādiqa while he was in Aleppo, and he killed them, crucified them, and cut up books that were with them, then he paraded his army past them.
