✧ The Expedition of ʿAbd al-Karīm b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb Then the year 164 AH began Among the events of it: The expedition of ʿAbd al-Karīm b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb: a patrician came against him with ninety thousand, and ʿAbd al-Karīm was unable to withstand him, so he fled. Al-Mahdī wanted to strike his neck, but intercession was made for him, so he imprisoned him. Al-Mahdī's construction at ʿĪsābādh al-Kubrā In it, al-Mahdī built at ʿĪsābādh al-Kubrā a palace of mud brick until he laid the foundation of his palace that was of baked brick. Its foundation was laid on Wednesday in the month of Dhū al-Qaʿdah. Al-Mahdī dismissed Muḥammad b. Sulaymān from his offices In it, al-Mahdī dismissed Muḥammad b. Sulaymān from his offices and appointed Ṣāliḥ b. Dāwūd over what had been under Muḥammad b. Sulaymān. From Muṣʿab, who said: When al-Mahdī built ʿĪsābādh and settled in his residence there, he ordered that the sons of the Muhājirūn and the sons of the Anṣār be recorded for him. They were recorded, and he summoned their leaders and sat in a public assembly for them. He distributed among them three thousand thousand dirhams, enriching every poor person, mending every broken one, and relieving every distressed one. Then the orators rose and delivered speeches, and the poets entered and recited, and he distributed among them five hundred thousand dirhams. Then he called for his lunch, and his special companions, his inner circle, and the people of rank among his commanders attended and ate. None of them departed except with a gift and honor. Prayers for him multiplied in the roads and the deserts, and people said: “This is the key to good, this is the Mahdī of this community whom the Prophet ﷺ gave glad tidings of.” On that day Marwān b. Abī Ḥafṣah rose and recited to him: No lightning flashes but a stranger yearns, as if from the promptings of his longing he is afflicted with disease. Gatherings of intimacy—a rain whose downpour drizzles upon me from the comfort of al-Mahdī, pouring forth. A sun—yet none of its signs have dazzled us; a cloud whose precipitation is leaves and gold. You have made true, O best of those hoped for and relied upon, my expectation with multiples of what I had reckoned. You gave seventy thousand without pursuing it from us, and you are no reproacher for what you bestow. A light of guidance has shone for the people through al-Mahdī, illuminating while the dawn is veiled in darkness. A caliph pure of garments, holding fast to truth; he has no discipline in anything else. Al-Mahdī's departure when he went on the Ḥajj In it, when he laid the foundation of this palace, al-Mahdī set out for al-Kūfah as a pilgrim. He stayed at Ruṣāfat al-Kūfah for some days, then departed heading for the Ḥajj until he reached al-ʿAqabah. There he perceived the scarcity of water, and he was seized by a fever, so he returned from al-ʿAqabah. The people became thirsty, and he became angry with Yaqṭīn because he was in charge of the waterworks. Al-Mahdī returned and sent his brother Ṣāliḥ b. al-Manṣūr, who led the people in the Ḥajj. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān was dismissed from Yemen In it, ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān was dismissed from Yemen out of displeasure. He sent someone to meet him and search his baggage and inventory what was with him. Then he imprisoned him at al-Rabīʿ's when he arrived, until he confessed to the amount of wealth, jewels, and ambergris that he confessed to. He appointed Manṣūr b. Yazīd in his place. The governor of Makkah, al-Madīnah, al-Ṭāʾif, and al-Yamāmah was Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān; over Yemen was Manṣūr b. Yazīd; over the prayer of al-Kūfah and its events, the districts of the Tigris, al-Baḥrayn, ʿUmān, the districts of al-Ahwāz, and Fārs was Ṣāliḥ b. Dāwūd b. ʿAlī. Over Khurāsān was al-Musayyib b. Zuhayr; over al-Mawṣil was Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl; over the judiciary of al-Baṣrah was ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan; over Egypt was Ibrāhīm b. Ṣāliḥ; over Ifrīqiyah was Yazīd b. Khālid; over Ṭabaristān, al-Rūyān, and Jurjān was Yaḥyā al-Ḥarashī; over al-Rayy was Khalaf b. ʿAbd Allāh. The march of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī to Saraqusṭah In it, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī marched to Saraqusṭah, after he had already sent Thaʿlabah b. ʿUbayd to it with a dense army. Sulaymān b. Yaqẓān and al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā had agreed to renounce obedience to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, as we have mentioned, and they were intent on it. Thaʿlabah fought them with fierce fighting. One day he returned to his camp, and Sulaymān seized the opportunity of his heedlessness, came out against him, captured him, and took him. His army dispersed. Sulaymān summoned Qārluh, the king of the Franks, and promised to hand over the town and Thaʿlabah to him. When he arrived, he had nothing in his hand except Thaʿlabah, so he took him and returned to his country, thinking that he would obtain a great ransom for him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān neglected him for a while, then he set those who sought him from the Franks, and they released him. When this year came, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān marched to Saraqusṭah. He dispersed his sons in the directions to repel every opponent and then to assemble at Saraqusṭah. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān preceded them there. Al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā had killed Sulaymān b. Yaqẓān and had sole control of Saraqusṭah. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came upon him immediately after that and besieged its people with a severe siege. His sons came to him from the regions, bringing with them all who opposed them, and they informed him of the obedience of others. Al-Ḥusayn desired peace and submitted to obedience. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān granted him that, made peace with him, took his son Saʿīd as a hostage, and departed from him. He raided the lands of the Franks, subdued them, plundered, took captives, and reached Qalahurrah. He conquered the city of Fakīrah and demolished the fortresses of that region. He marched to the lands of the Basques and encamped at the fortress of Mathmayn al-Aqraʿ, which he conquered. Then he advanced to Maldūthūn b. Aṭlāl and besieged his castle. The people aimed for its mountain and fought them in it, and they took it by force and destroyed it. Then he returned to Qurṭubah. In it, a conflict arose between the Berbers of Balansiyah and the Berbers of Shantabariyyah in al-Andalus, and many wars occurred between them in which many people of both factions were killed. Their battles were famous.
